There is one popular form of business er recreation, in which Atchison is taking no part, which is a little singular, for, as a rule, in Atchison, "everything goes." We speak of the military movement. When the "unholy rebellion" had recently been there was no excessive hankering among the returned volunteers for anything more in the military line.

The gentleman who had for some years spread his frugal board with hard tack and the sub-structure of a female hog, and who had skipped along beneath a July sun, bending under a knapsack which, at about 4 p. seemed to assume the size and weight of an ordinary bureau, seemed "penetrated," as the French say, with the idea that the man who would play soldier in time of peace was a hopeless and howling idiot. But that was a long time ago a generation of young fellows has grown up since the war some of the "old boys" have forgotten the disagreeable side of soldiery, and there is a general revival of the military spirit On the whole. The Champion believes it a good thing. There is no necessity for its injuring anybody and some good may result.

Every young man must and will have something to think about, and it may as well be the "Guards," as the color of a meerschaum or the education of a lop-eared dog with liver-colored spots. Bayonets are better than "budge," and an enemy's drill is preferable to an all night drunk. The army as a resort discounts several other places we could mention. Socially the "Guards" area power. They march in all the processions( run the "light fantastic" business, keep up the city band arrange all the excursions, ornament the streets, and are adored by the women.

Neighboring organizations indulge in competitive drills, which create as much interest and break fewer bones than base ball. In fact, actual warfare, to say nothing of the mimic article, is a trifle less dangerous than the last named amusement- For these, and for other reasons, The Champion believes in the "Kansas First," Col. Welles Brown commanding, and would be glad to see the young men of Atchison take some steps to. Current Items Found Floating Arounc Gents' line furnishing goods and hats at Stetter's.
