AB THURSDAY, MAY 21, 1998 Money THE SALINA JOURNAJ. T U.S. CURRENCY Jackson has new look on $20 bill Most of Treasury's changes :are aimed at counterfeiters and their sophisticated equipment By The Associated Press WASHINGTON — A new $20 bill is coming with high-tech features designed to trip up computer-savvy counterfeiters. But the change people will notice first is the larger and slightly off-center portrait of Andrew Jackson. ' The new portrait, like the old, is based on a -• "drawing from about 1820. But it's a close-up and shows the nation's seventh president with r 'darker hair than the earlier version. The view ;" ! on the back depicts the White House from the ; - 'north rather than from the south. ' ! Most of the changes are more than cosmetic. '" They're aimed at bogus bill makers armed with - -increasingly sophisticated color copiers, com' puter scanners, color ink jet printers and pub' • -lishing-grade software. '^ ] "As we ... raise the hurdle even higher for criminals, we ensure that our currency re* "mains respected and trusted around the globe," -'said Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, who un- veiled the new design Wednesday with Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan. The features include: • A watermark to the right of the portrait and in its shape, only smaller, visible when the bill is held up to light. • An embedded polymer security thread to the far left of the portrait. "USA TWENTY" and a flag are printed on the thread. When exposed to ultraviolet light, the thread glows green. • A numeral on the lower right corner of the front printed in color-shifting ink that looks green when viewed straight on and black when viewed from an angle. • Very fine lines around Jackson's portrait and the picture of the White House. When duplicated on a copier, the lines come out in a wavy moire pattern. • The words "United States of America" in microprinting visible with a magnifying glass along the lower left rim of Jackson's portrait and microprinted "USA" within the numeral 20 in the lower left. The new notes will begin circulating in the fall. Old $20s will be recirculated until they wear out, on average in about two years. Those notes will be legal tender indefinitely. The Associated Press Federal Reserve Bank official Donald F. Doros holds the new $20 bill design. V RETAIL Kmart to have in-store -,{ electronic catalog Customers will be able to buy goods, services not carried in Kmart By Bloomberg News DETROIT — Kmart Corp. said it's introducing an electronic catalog at 100 stores this year and expanding its private-label merchandise in an effort to boost sales and offset shrinking profit margins. The third-largest U.S. retailer has rebounded in the last year by closing and selling weaker stores and increasing sales of merchandise made just for its stores, such as Jaclyn Smith women's clothes and Sesame Street kids' clothes. It still lags industry leader Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and the Target stores division of Dayton Hudson Corp., the No. 2 retailer. The company will roll out the electronic catalog system, called THE MARKET IN REVIEW :; NYSE Jt§ST ACTIVE (si on MORE) Name Vol (00) Last Chg Compaq s 126686 29^16 -Vtt Analog 101036 27% -6Vs AT&t' 81496 58% +2?/i6 PWIMor 81348 36Ve +Vie PepSiCo 80241 40'/2 +2^16 ^liAINEliSffZoRMORE)- ; Name ' Last Chg %Chg Alphmwt 33%4 +5%4 +31.3 ZdnlthE 2 +% +23.1 Ro$Cmg 7% +•% +13.3 A/ipcpf 24 5 /ie +2'Vi6 +12.4 L-3Comn 29% +2% +10.3 -•te'LoSERS(SZOHMORE) Name Last Chg %Chg Analog 27% -6Ve -18.1 ARplMg 6 5 /w -0/16 -11.4 HancFab 12%-1?i6 -10.8 AvabtpfA 13V2 -1V2 -10.0 GDurang 12V2 -13/16 -8.7 Advanced " 1,490 Declined 1,466 Unchanged 565 Total Issues 3,521 New Highs 63 New Lows 57 Volume 697,009,240 I AMEX MOST ACTIVE ($1 6tt MOTE) Name Vol (00) Last Chg SPDR 57166 112%2 +1'/16 GiantFd 51682 42'Vw Audvox 8281 5% - 3 /i6 VlacB 7483 577/8 +1 GreyhndL 6760 6 +'/4 GAINERS (« 2 OR MORE) Name Last Chg %Chg AutoBond 7^/6 +2% +53.7 DaWolfa 8 +1^16 +24.3 AutoBpfA 8 +1% +20.8 Softnet 12% +1 1 /2 +13.8 EnvrTc 10 15 /ie +1 3 /ie +12.2 '< i.OSEflSJ$2«R«o«E) Name Last Chg %Chg SabaPet 2»/ie -Vie -14.0 RFPow 3 -% -11.1 MAISys 4% -V2 -10.3 UnityBwt 9% -1 -9.4 DivCpRsn 12% -1'A -9.2 DIARY Advanced 242 Declined 330 Unchanged 175 Total Issues 747 New Highs 16 New Lows 15 Volume 37,381,870 ;OMPOSI NASDAQ MOST ACTIVE ($1 OR MORE) Name Vol (00) Last Chg DellCptrs 283454 91% -2% Intel s 172595 77 -2^16 WorldCm 104733 44% -%> Cisco s 101222 78% -1 4 %4 FPAMd 101172 2«Vi6 -1% GAINERS ($2 OR MORE) Name Last Chg %Chg NeoTnrwt 9% +5% +150.0 NeoThera 19V4+9'Vie +101.3 Medar 2 27 /32 +2%2 +46.8 NetwNrth 4 +1'/4 +45.5 Cortex 3V8 +2%2 +40.8 LOSERS ($2 OR MORE) Name Last Chg %Chg Matritch 2^ie-1 7 /ie -35.9 FPAMd 2«/, 6 -1% -32.8 PrecStdn 3 -1'/4 -29.4 SBE 4^16 -1% -27.7 Unidynen 3 7 /8 -1Vs -22.5 DIARY Advanced 1,729 Declined 2,369 Unchanged 1,519 Total Issues 5,617 New Highs 65 New Lows 111 Volume 674,389,300 TE STOCI DAILY DOW JONES •—-—.•I Mav 20. 1998 •A • • ,,,,,™ <JVil( /rr 9171.48 +116.83 High Low ^ ' •• " > >«Vs^/ -_/V^ ' 2/1/98 3/1/98 9,219.06 9,010.56 jV^s. /• tXy-f* \f 4/1/98 Highest close May 13, 1998 9,211.84 "*.
