THURSDAY, JANUARY 2, 1969 THE REGISTER-NEWS — MT. VERNON. ILLINOW 5—C T San Diego Is 200 Years Old SAN DIEGO. Calif. (AP) — A < 200-gun salute at noon Wednes- 1 day opens San Diego's 200th an- i niversary celebration. A year- \ long list of hundreds of events is : planned. Eighty guns at the North Is- j land Naval Air Station will be fired at once, along with 40 guns each at the Marine Corps recruit depot, the Naval training > center and the Naval amphibious base. At midnight tonight, Roman j Catholic sisters at the old Mis-! : sion San Diego de Alcala will ring the mission's, bells. ! The city was founded by ! Father Juniper Serra in 1769. TOO MUCH HEAT TORRINGTON, Wyo. (AP) — The Torrington fire department recently doused a fire in — a camper trailer parked on a Torrington street, confining damage to a burned spot on the roof. The fire chief said a glass bottle of butane gas had been overfilled and left in the camper. When the sun got around to the 1 West, the sun's rays overheated ! the bottle and caused a pop-off ,; valve to open. The butane gas I seeped to a vent of a wall heater \ and was ignited. OLD BOATS litter the beach at Hafnarfjordur. Iceland, where firctar Oddsson photographed this pencrf.il scene. UP A TREE as to what to wear, Terri "Danny" Howard went daydreaming at the International Bazaar in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. "Danny," an American teen-ager who lives on the island, must have found some enchantment at the bazaar, where the shops are built in the mode of the country they represent, for her costume "magically" changed to suit the surroundings. At top left, "Danny" is seen in a Norwegian dress and then a sari, top right. Tired of all that cover, she wandered into the French quarter where she blossomed out in a provocative bikini outfit which she quickly switched for a mini-torero getup in the Spanish section. Still undecided, "Danny" ended up in an Indian midi-shift, sitting on the steps in the Calcutta ar«*a. Timely Quotes The federal government should not become the employer of the last resort.
