THE SALINA JOURNAL Almanac WEDNESDAY, MAY 20, 1998 B3 JOYCE JILLSON Creators Syndicate Inc. HOROSCOPES • ARIES (March 21-April 19). Your role should riot be confused with your personality - develop a rich life outside of your associations. Return a mysterious phone call. Your imagination adds creative touches that brighten routine activities • TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You are moved to reveal a secret to someone you love. A sibling could seek your advice but might not follow it. This is a good time to do correcting and polishing work, such as touch-ups or rewriting. •GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You are drawn to the quiet, steady type for love and friendship. Don't make a promise you don't want to keep. A new romance can banish a broken heart. Cooperative efforts bring success. • CANCER (June 22-July 22). Love is found in well- established locations that are fairly close to your home or business. Search for an important fact or detail for a friend, and the favor is returned f when you need it most. Older persons need your assistance. • LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Find romance with someone who has been hurt by another. You may have to choose between two lovers, and you could decide to choose neither of themi A time-limited opportunity is presented to you tonight. • TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (May 20). If you've been engaged in an area of study, your reward will come in the form of a great new job or promotion. Those who are focused on relationships will experience the same boosts in love. Healing is possible in the arms of a Gemini or Scorpio. You could marry in January or March. Your lucky numbers are 5, 23, 24, 30 and 32. • VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Avail yourself of trusted advice. Friends who are also business associates persuade you to change a method or approach. Members of your group take a definite stand, spurring you to do the same. • LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). A delayed communication arrives at precisely the right moment to help you. An off-again relationship could be on again. Remind yourself why you are pursuing your lofty goal in the first place. • SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Don't refuse to hear a lover's complaint. Events may have an almost unreal quality, as if you are playing a part. Use your judgment if an assignment seems too easy -- something might have been left out of your instructions. • SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Education plays a major role in plans you make for the summer. A new dimension is added to a close relationship. Something that has been out of reach may now be yours. • CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Don't underestimate your influence on events at a distance. The willingness of a colleague to share his or her knowledge and skills will speed a project to completion. A seemingly frivolous person might surprise you. • AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You are analytical and creative. There is more at stake than your own desires; when you keep this in mind, you reach goals more quickly. You might find that you are no longer interested in someone who once fascinated you. • PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). A group meeting or discussion is explosive but will certainly produce needed results. Convince a more conservative person of the merits of adventure. Don't neglect a detail that seems minor but could be pivotal. ATLANTA — Having severed ties with his longtime manager, Elton John plans to establish his own management company. London tabloids last week reported that the singer, a part-time Atlanta resident, and John Reid had parted ways. Colin Bell, an executive with London Records, will be managing director of Elton John Management Ltd., , nuM The Atlanta Journal- JOMN Constitution reported Tuesday. Reid became Elton John's manager in 1971. Over the years he has managed jOr advised such acts as Queen, Simple Mnids and George Michael. J? Team buy might be fiction CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Is novelist Tom Clancy's $201 million bid to buy the Minnesota Vikings in clear and present danger? Clancy was a no-show as this week's NFL meetings got under way. He was supposed to present details of his bid and ownership group to the league finance committee Monday. But he asked for a one-week postponement for more CLANCY preparation, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said. 'Stand and Deliver' doesn't LOS ANGELES — The unorthodox teaching methods that made Jaime Escalante a star and the subject of the 1987 movie "Stand and Deliver" have failed to make the grade in Northern California. At least a third of Escalante's Algebra I students at Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento have dropped out since the first of the year, leaving only 20. He no longer even teaches advanced calculus, the subject that brought him national attention, because only six students signed up. As a teacher in the Los Angeles barrio, Escalante transformed a lackluster math program into a nationally known success. Gardner museum needs home SMITHFIELD, N.C. — The Ava Gardner museum is looking for its fourth home since its opening 18 years ago. The building has been sold to a church, which has given the museum a year to find a new location for the movie costumes, posters, magazine covers and photos, photos, photos of the sultry, dark- haired beauty. From Wire Service Reports V ADVICE Fat, greasy and dirty, hubby's no turn-on in bed Dear Ann Landers: Why do you imply there is something abnormal about a married woman who considers sex unhygienic and degrading? Maybe, like me, she has had to endure sex with an overweight husband who pays absolutely no attention to personal hygiene. I have pleaded for counseling and explained to him how I feel. His solution? He now takes a shower prior to sex, which helps, but it does not compensate for the rolls of fat that are a huge turnoff. His greasy hair, which ruins pillow cases, doesn't do much for my libido either. Do I still love him after 14 years? Yes, because he has many fine qualities. Am I sexually attracted to him? Absolutely not. I tolerate the sex in order to keep the fam- ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. ily together and honor my vow "for better or worse." Am I completely turned off by sex? You betcha, just like many child victims of incest who tolerated sex because they had no alternative. The whole idea has become revolting. But sometimes, there is no way out of it, so we simply have to "endure." — Wishing I Were Sexless in Michigan Dear Wishing: Your husband may not be willing to do much about his weight, but he certainly can do something about his personal hygiene. You should insist on it. Let him know that if he doesn't wash his hair before coming to bed, the box office will be closed. And keep your word. Dear Ann Landers: I am engaged to a man who is wonderful, caring and generous in every way except one. His car. Our wedding is 10 months away. We are living together now. We both work as attorneys in the same office, have a joint checking account and have several in- TV TONIGHT vestments together. My annual "girls only" weekend in Las Vegas is next month. Because we will be driving through the desert, I asked my fiance if I could take his car, which is larger than mine and air conditioned (mine is not). He refused the request. I am hurt and baffled. I have an excellent driving record and would be very careful. Am I out of line to be upset? What do you think? — Riverside, Calif. Dear Riverside: I think, if you are wise, you will not push the parameters, even though your fiance does sound a bit stubborn and ungenerous. Some men have a thing about their cars. They would sooner lend you a toothbrush. If you should wheedle, nag or cajole him into letting you take his car to Las Vegas and some idiot ran into you, there would be hell to pay. Dear Ann Landers: My husband and I own a lovely summer home and live there from June until August. Friends and relatives often ask if they can stay at our place when we're not using it. We always say no. Here's the reason: In the past, when we said yes, we returned to find the walls in the children's bedrooms stained from what looked like a cola war. The pet they brought (without asking) ripped the rug and couch upholstery. The utility bill doubled. You try to rise above it and not to be petty. Meanwhile, you are stuck with hours of cleaning and a huge long-distance telephone bill. There is no note of apology or an offer to repair the damage. No mention of the long-distance phone calls. Also, no thank-you note. Sound familiar? — No Signature, Of Course Dear No Sig: Every year, I receive at least 100 letters like yours. As always, the slobs poison the well for the decent folks. People of good taste do not ASK if they can use a summer place. They wait to have it offered. 5/20/98 OPBS, Bunker Hill-Hays Q NBC, Wichita Q FOX, Wlchlta-Salina QCBS, Topeka Q Access 6, Salina Q FOX, Kansas City OPBS, Wlchlta-Hutchlnson H ABC, Kansas City ED ABC, Wichita IB CBS, Wichita IB NBC, Kansas City fQ Encore IQWTBS fBcinemax EDstarzl 01 HBO SJ Discovery S3 CNN SDf/x B3Amer.
