He graduated from Mt. Summit High School in 1938. His marriage to Mary Etta Downs of Springport produced two daughters. During World War II, Joe joined the U.S. Navy, and he served in Guam and at Navy Pier in Chicago.

In 1946 he married Mildred Anne Rinehart of Sesser, Illinois. They were married fifty-five years, until Mildred's passing in 2001. They had four children who survive, as well as a son who died as an infant. Joe took pride in all he did, and he made a living through many jobs. He was a career fireman for the Muncie Fire Department, and retired in 1975.

Joe always enjoyed the retirees' breakfasts, and until last month he always attended those breakfasts. Joe owned and operated his own business through many years. Starting as a landscaper, he later owned and operated all sorts of heavy equipment and dump trucks. He built several houses in the Muncie area. Following his formal retirement, he then worked for Panscape, Stewart Trucking, and others.

He was the general superintendent on the buildings that now serve as "The Gathering" church on North Walnut. There were few places in central Indiana where Joe didn't have a story to relate often about work and he recounted those stories often. If you listened, he could teach you a lot. Using his GI Bill, Joe became a licensed pilot, and he once had to make an emergency landing because of low fuel. Mildred told the story that "the cornhusks were hitting the wings of the plane," as they approached the ground.

To Joe's alarm, every time as they were almost to land, the engine would roar hard and they'd have to go back up and try again. Finally it was discovered that Mildred was leaning onto the throttle! Once the problem was discovered, Joe landed the plane safely in the pasture, next to the cornfield. After retiring in 1975 from the fire department, Joe and Mildred spent the winters in the South, mostly at South Padre Island, Texas. They fished, played cards, and enjoyed the warm weather and made many good friends. Joe found friends wherever he went, and in his later years he participated at Forest Park Senior Citizens Center where he served on the Board of Directors.

Joe's memberships include Gethsemane United Methodist Church, where he was part of the Friendship Sunday School class; member of Local 103 Operating Engineers; International Association of Fire Fighters; Professional Fire Fighters of Muncie, IAFF Local 1348; Muncie Lodge No. 433, AM of Indiana, 33rd Vested Life Member, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis; He attended the local Masonic Lodge in Port Isabel, Texas. Joe held a realtor's license. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel. Memorials may be sent to the Muncie Mission, 1725 S. Lib resident outside a near- southside club. Gerald Allen Mason 37, 1309 S.

Bea Gerald Mason Jr. con was preliminarily charged with aggravated battery and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. Police were sent to the Montaz Banquet Hall and Lounge, 700 S. Madison shortly after midnight. Emergency dispatchers had received a call from Mason, who said "he had shot a person for hitting him in the face," according to a probable cause affidavit.

Mason's alleged victim, Marquis R. Stokes, 28, apparently fled after being shot and was later taken by a friend to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where physicians removed a bullet from his lower right leg. According to the affidavit, Stokes and Mason first exchanged words in the club, then encountered one another in the parking lot, where Stokes allegedly struck the older man in the face. "Mason then pulled a handgun and fired (the weapon) multiple times," the document said. One bullet entered Stokes' leg, and another possibly grazed his left elbow, investigators said.

At least two vehicles parked nearby were also hit by gunfire, reports said. Stokes' girlfriend has a child fathered by Mason, according to the affidavit. At the shooting scene early Wednesday, police Lt. Al Williams said Mason had identified himself to officers as the man who had fired the gunshots. "He was cooperative," police Lt.

Steve Cox said later. "I think that he thinks he did the right thing, but producing a gun and starting to spray rounds like that is a reckless act. Two cars were hit. We don't believe his life was in danger. "Producing a gun and just firing off shots is not the way that needs to be handled." Mason was being held without bond Wednesday afternoon in the Delaware County jail.

Cox said police were also investigating whether Stokes should be charged with May 11, 2013 at Community Hospital in Anderson. Online condolences at (Sayre) Wind farm drafts bat-protection plans By Rick Callahan Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS The operators of Indiana's largest wind farm are proposing changing the nighttime operations of the farm's 300-plus wind turbines to protect endangered Indiana bats from being killed by the turbines' spinning blades. Two of the mouse-sized federally protected species have been found dead since 2009 near wind turbines at northwestern Indiana's Fowler Ridge Wind Farm. The three firms that operate the farm spanning nearly 55,000 wind-swept acres propose in a habitat conservation plan now pending along with a permit request before the U.S.

Fish and Wildlife Service to increase the wind speed at which the farm's 355 wind turbines begin spinning and generating electricity. Under that plan, the turbines would be programmed to begin spinning and generating power when the wind reaches 11 mph from sunset to sunrise between Aug. 1 and Oct. 15.
