THE SALINA JOURNAL NATION WEDNESDAY, MAY 20, 1998 AS BRIEFLY zjiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiimimiMiiiiiiiimmmiiimiiiiimiiiiimi: Pagers lose service as satellite malfunctions LOS ANGELES — A communications satellite spun out of control Tuesday afternoon, interrupting service to millions of pager users and disrupting behind-the- scenes television transmissions across the country. Galaxy 4, which is operated by PanAmSat, started having problems about 5:30 p.m. Central time, said a company technician who asked not to be named. The company was still able to communicate with the satellite, and technicians hoped to restore its correct orbit. Scott Baradell, a spokesman for PageNet, one of several paging companies whose services were interrupted, estimated that 80 percent to 90 percent of the 40 million to 45 million U.S. pager users lost service. The only customers not affected were those whose connections are through ground-based radio transmitters, he said. Baradell said it would take about a day for his company to switch service to another satellite. ' Three sentenced for actor's shooting LOS ANGELES — Three Cambodian-born gang members were sentenced to lengthy prison terms Tuesday for robbing and killing Oscar-winning actor Haing Ngor. All three said they were not guilty. "I did not commit this horrible crime," said Indra Lim, who was given 26 years to life in prison. "I've been falsely accused." "I feel very sorry for my mother and my co-defendants' families because the system did not work for me," said Tak Sun Tan, 21, sentenced to 56 years to life in prison. Jason Chan, 20, who drew the toughest sentence of life in prison without possibility of parole, addressed Superior Court Judge J.D. Smith in a clear voice. "1 know the law requires you to sentence me to a very harsh sentence," he said. "Before you do, I want the families and world to know I had no part in this murder and robbery and I don't know who did." Prisoner kills three officers then himself BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — A man riding in a police car wriggled out of his handcuffs Tuesday, shot and killed two officers and then fatally shot a state trooper before taking a hostage at a gas station. After a nearly four-hour standoff, police stormed the station and found the man dead from a self- inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The hostage, a female clerk at the station, had been released earlier. The man was initially picked up for questioning in the shooting death of his 4-year-old son. Police said he had a criminal record dating back to 1986. After the officers were killed, about 170 police officers surrounded the Shell station near this city about 50 miles north of Tampa. WFLA broadcast an interview with the man, who called the radio station and said he shot the two officers in the car after they refused to listen to his explanation of how his stepson died of a gunshot wound. He said the boy's death was an accident. Senior shot to death 3 days before graduation FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. — A high school senior shot and killed another student in the school parking lot Tuesday, three days before they were to graduate, apparently because they had argued about a girl. The shooting happened about 2 p.m. in a parking lot at Lincoln County High School. Jacob Davis, 18, was armed with a rule when he got out of his car and confronted Robert "Nick" Creson, 18, Fayetteville Police Chief • Tom Barnes said. Davis was 15 to 20 feet away from Creson when he fired the first shot, but it's unclear whether it struck Creson. "Nick told him, 'Quit messing around,' " Barnes said. "The second shot hit him somewhere in the chest, and he fell backwards, and there was another shot fired into Nick as he was on the ground." Creson died about 15 minutes after being brought to Lincoln Regional Hospital. From Wire Service Reports They're Bach . .
