A4 WEDNESDAY. MAY 2O, 1998 INTERNATIONAL THE SAUNA JOURNAL ^PAKISTAN-INDIA akistan fears attack by India India is cracking down in a border region between two nations By KATHY GANNON The Associated Press '- ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan claimed Tuesday that India's crackdown in a border province between the two rival nations amounted to a "direct military threat." The declaration heightened fears of conflict in the days after India's nuclear tests. ;"Without any doubt we are sitting on top of a volcano, the biggest flashpoint for a conflagration because of one regime's madness," Pakistani Information Minister Mushahid Hussein said, citing India's "saber-rattling and brandishing of the nuclear sword." India's hard-line Home Minister Lai Krishna Advani said Monday th'at his country wanted to provide better weapons to its forces in India's part of Kashmir. ^Kashmir is the only Muslim-majority state in predominantly Hindu India. India and Pakistan have fought two wars over the province and its border is still disputed. Advani, who was scheduled to V TRADE visit India's Jammu-Kashmir state today, said India's nuclear capability — demonstrated last week with five nuclear tests — showed his country's resolve "to deal firmly and strongly with Pakistan's hostile designs and activities in Kashmir." On Tuesday, Indian troops trying to flush out suspected militants from a village in Kashmir shot dead four civilians and injured seven others, police said. No militants were killed or caught. "The latest statements emanating from India (are) a very serious and alarming development," Hussein, the information minister, said. "They have threatened incursions into Pakistan's part of Kashmir. It is a direct threat to, not just Pakistan's security, it is also a direct military threat to the peace and stability of the region. "It is a danger that goes beyond Pakistan and India to the entire South Asian region." So far Pakistan has not exploded a nuclear device in response to India, despite growing pressure from Pakistanis to do so. The in- .ternational community has urged restraint. Former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto said Tuesday that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif "has no guts to detonate a nuclear bomb." Castro denounces deal regulating Cuban trade CASTRO business with Quban leader calls U.S.-European accord unclear and unethical By The Associated Press GENEVA — Cuban President Fidel'Castro on Tuesday denounced a deal between President Clinton and European leaders that regulates trade with Cuba as unclear, contradictory and unethical. .;The deal, announced Monday in London, aims to ease U.S. restrictions on multinational companies doing Cuba. An agreement between the United States and the European Union over the 1996 Helms-Burton Act should not be reached at Cuba's expense, Castro said in a speech to the World Trade Organization, which is celebrating 50 years of T ACCIDENT Girl hit by car lands in bed of passing truck By The Associated Press OSLO, Norway — A girl hit by a car while riding her bike tumbled through the air and landed in the bed of a truck going the opposite direction, sustaining bumps and bruises but no serious injuries. Kristin Nalvik Loendal, 9, was riding down a steep hill Friday in Aalesund, 300 miles northwest of Osjo, and failed to stop at an intersection. A car hit her and sent her flying, the Sunnmoersposten newspaper reported Tuesday. The driver jumped out of his car to help the girl — but couldn't find her. Finally, he spotted her in the back of the truck, whose driver had also stopped to help. Kristin had come down in the cargo bed of the glass company truck, somehow missing the panes of glass that were stacked in upright racks. She was stunned and suffered minor cuts, the newspaper said. the global trading system. Such a settlement "would be an inconceivable dishonor for Europe," he added. Castro put the cost of the 37- year-old U.S. economic embargo against his country at $60 billion. Under the London deal, the Clinton administration would grant permanent waivers to the Helms-Burton Act, which imposes U.S. sanctions against foreign companies that do business with Cuba. In exchange, members of the 15- nation European Union agreed to join in creating a global registry of property confiscated by Cuba and other governments that would remain off-limits to investors. The Europeans challenged Washington's sanctions before the World Trade Organization in October 1996 but lastspring decided to suspend their case for a year to allow for a negotiated settlement. In his speech, Castro also condemned what he saw as rich countries' domination of the trade organization. Goinv OutOf Business Sale Every Thing Must Go...
