Wes Chandler basked in the glow of Florida's 22-17 comeback victory over Georgia in a nationally televised thriller yesterday but modestly tried to brush off his three touchdowns that brought it about. "Awards are okay," Chandler said after he was named offensive player of the game by the ABC telecast team.

"But the Important thing is that we won and came together as a team." He and Florida coach Doug Dickey referred to rumors circulating this week that the Gators were divided among themselves and that Dickey's job was on the line. "The week-long furor brought out a fighting team," Dickey said. "It was important that we didn't give the game away." "All the talk during the week helped psych us up," Chandler said. "We got together at practice and decided to play our hearts out and we did." Georgia Coach Vince Dooley called Chandler a super player for adjusting to the new position of running back after three years as a wide Teceiver. "They went to him when they needed him, and he came through with game-breaking skill," Dooley said.

Georgia's ball-handling was curtailed after quarterback Jeff Pyburn was hurt on the opening play of the second quarter, Dooley said. Pyburn ran out-of-bounds untouched but tore a ligament as he went down a ramp beyond the sidelines. But, after 19 successful extra point conversions this season, kicker Rusty Bennett missed the kick.

Memphis State quarterback Larry Patterson tossed a 24-yard touchdown pass to wingback Keith Wright early in the third quarter. He then flipped a pass to end Ernest Gray for the two-point ccu-; version to put Memphis State back in the game at 24-14. However, that was the end of Memphis State's scoring. Jim Gaylor, bouncing toack from failures earlier in the season, kicked field goals of 37 and 43 yards in the second, and fourth quarters for Tennessee. Miss.

Portela had broken the conference record for the most field goals in one', game by booting five against Florida last week. "The first half was a matter of overconfidence and lack of concentration. We have to take them more seriously." Kentucky wasted little time taking command the third quarter.

Vandy saw one promising drive stopped when quarterback Mike Wright fumbled and Kentucky's Bud Diehl recovered at the UK 35. Bow makes interception The next series found Vandy backed up deep in its own territory, and Wright threw the pass that sealed Vandy's fate. John Bow made an over-the-shoulder interception in front of split end Martin Cox and returned it to the Vandy 36. "That was a sensational interception," Curci said. "It was third-and-about-22 and I knew he was going to throw," said Bow, a sophomore from Miami.

"I was just laying back. They only had one man in a deep pattern and after he got by Dallas Owens, I was back there. I was lucky to be there at the right time, I guess." Kentucky didn't cash in right away because linebacker Randy Sitta-son intercepted one of Ramsey's passes at the Vandy 11. But Kentucky linebacker Dave Fadrowski returned the favor, grabbing Randy Hampton's pass intended for Preston Brown and returning it 24 yards to the Vandy six. Dipre went over from there on the first play.

"Nobody touched me, there was a hole so big," said Dipre, who later scored, again to give him two touchdowns' in one game for the first time since high school. Vandy, bottled up all day by Kentucky's defense, was finished. The only offense it could muster was the passing of Wright, ranked No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference, and the receiving of Cox, also No. 1 in the league.

Wright threw 32 times, completing 20 for 197 yards. He hooked up with Cox on a third-down pass that kept alive the march to the first field goal, and his 62-yarder to tight end Hal Kemp set up Vandy's other field goal after Kentucky had gone ahead 6-3 on Ramsey's four-yard scoring run. But managed nothing on the ground against the Kentucky defense which losing coach Fred Pancoast said was the best he had seen in college football. By halftime, Vandy had four net yards rushing on 15 tries, an average of 9.6 INCHES per try. For the game, it ruslied 28 times' for 11 yards, a little over 14 inches per attempt.

Kentucky won its eighth game of the season 28-6. only four tackles for Kentucky, but three accounted for 12 yards in losses. Nose guard Richard Jaffe practically lived in the Vandy backfield the first half. "We just ran a few stunts, not many," said Jaffe.

"We played our 5-2 like we have all year. By the third quarter they were teeing off on us, but we were just trying to prevent the long gainer. Our whole defense played well." Vandy center John Wooten spent the afternoon inches away from Jaffe. "He's excellent," Wooten said. "He has excellent technique.

He grabs you by the shoulder pads and pulls you down. He's hard to beat." Still found himself the target of double team blocks from the tight end Kemp and anybody he could summon for help. "He's the best I've played against," said Kemp, who's 6 feet 3, 222 pounds. "I tried to match him strength for strength at first, but he just does what he wants to." Ramsey reaches milestone Ramsey led the offense with 11 of 22 passing for 131 yards, a performance that put him over 1,500 for his career. He's the first Kentucky player to top that mark in both running and passing.

"He scrambles good, he runs good and he passes good," said Vandy defensive tackle Dennis Harrison. "He's hard to bring down. Their whole offense is geared around Halfback Chris Hill, enjoying his return to the starting lineup, ran for 62 yards on only 11 carries. "It's been a little frustrating but the main thing is to keep you poise and hang in there," said Hill, who started the first three games, missed the Penn State victory because of a death in his family, recaptured the starting berth, then lost it again. The victory was the seventh straight in SEC play for Kentucky, a streak started a year ago with a victory over this same Vandy team.

Kentucky is 4-0 in league play this year. "Now we have Florida coming up and they have great speed, then we finish against Tennessee," said Curci. "It's another war each week. Quarterback Jimmy Streater ran for two touchdowns in the second quarter yesterday to lead Tennessee to a 27-14 victory over cross-state rival Memphis State. After Tennessee's Kelsey Finch scored on a one-yard plunge in the first quarter, Streater scored touchdowns on a one-yard run and a 25-yard sprint down the middle for a commanding 24-6 halftime lead over Memphis State. The victory ended a three-game losing streak for Tennessee, now 3-5 under coach Johnny Majors. For Memphis State, which fell to 5-4, it was the last chance to beat Tennessee until the early 1980s. Tennessee has won all six games against Memphis State since the series began in 1968.

Threadgill, deal Auburn Associated Press AUBURN, Ala. Quarterback Bruce Threadgill threw two touchdown passes, one for 73 yards, and defensive back Kenny Johnson set up two more scores with pass interceptions yesterday as Mississippi State handed Auburn its first Southeastern Conference football defeat of the season, 27-13. Afterward, MSU coach Bob Tyler commended his team for "staying together in these past few weeks" and disproving what he calls "a lot of ridiculous propaganda." There had been reports of bad morale and disciplinary problems on the MSU squad, but Tyler said it was a big victory "for our overall program" and one that the team needed badly. Prince Faisal of Saudi Arabia, watching his first American football game was in the homecoming day crowd of 58,000 which saw Auburn suffer its fifth defeat in nine games. But until yesterday, Auburn was 3-0 in SEC competition, having beaten Tennessee, Ole Miss and Florida.
