6 MONDAY, MAY 18. 1998 THE SALINA'JOURNAL AT SCHOOL FROM PAGE 5 studied and taught on an exchange program in the Netherlands. She is completing an assistantship program of two years of study at C.M.S.U. and has taught at the university for four semesters. She will graduate this spring with a master of arts degree and plans to continue her studies with the goal of attaining a master of fine arts degree. This fall she will be an assistant to the professor at Fort Hays University, Hays. « » » BUTLER COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Eleven graduating sophomores at Butler County Community College were surprised with awards for academic achievement. These awards are made possible by the contributions to the BCCC Employees Christmas Scholarship Fund last December. In the 20-year history of this fund, almost $16,000 has been awarded. A scholarship of $65 was awarded to Amanda Reed of Salina. * .» 1% LEADERSHIP CAMP: Eighteen students from Salina and Saline County recently attended a two-day Leadership Camp conducted by the Saline County Sheriffs Office Explorer Program and the Boy Scouts of America. Students participated in the following events: climbing and repelling, searching for lost subjects and mini survival walk, where students had used communication and team-building skills in order to complete the walk. This is the second Youth Leadership Camp to have been conducted by the sheriffs office. The following attended: Erin Marshall (team leader), Jamie Bethe (team leader), Chris Tuzic- ka, Travis Clark, Ryan Hellmer, Ryan Capps, Emily Cole, Breanna Oxandale, Martha Bethe, Tommy Komp, Justin Verhoeff, Eric Cooper, Tiffany Longino, Rachell Will, Erica Landis, Monica Neuman, Diane Molstad and Elicia Hernandez. The following Explorers also were promoted for their leadership qualities and number of hours dedicated to the post: Jamie Bethe (co-major), Justin Verhoeff (co-captain), Erin Marshall (lieutenant), Ryan Hellmer (corporal), Tiffany Longino (corporal), and Elicia Hernandez (corporal). The following advisers attended the camp: Sgt. Jim DuBois, Deputy Brent Melander, Reserve Deputy Jim Fletcher and Rachelle Kelley. .CONTINUED ON PAGE 7 The 1998 Salina Safe After-Prom Committee would like to thank the following businesses, organizations and individuals for their support and contributions. Space does not permit to list the many parents, teachers and other supporters that gave their time and financial support. After-Prom happens because of YOU!! Approximately 800 Juniors & Seniors attended from Salina Central, Sacred Heart and Salina South High Schools. Prizes and money were given away totaling over $15,000. The City of Salina can be proud of our community that supported this event and the responsible young adults who attended.
