She meets life strictly on her own terms and rarely asks or needs a pal on the back. My mentor in feline psychology is a cat named Lady Dottie, a fugitive from some suburban ?Jley who has been a nonpaying guest in my home for more than 10 years. A black mustache on her face gives her a weird resemblance to Adolf Hitler, but the has none of his ranting fanaticism. She is. however, a dictator but a quiet and, on the whole, a benevolent one. She does not pay the rent, earn an income by the s.veat of her brow, empty her sandbox or even cut up her own b :.pf kidney. All these things she has taught me to do for her and, like any member of royalty, she takes them for granted. Lady Dottie is a fine lesson in how one can live a life differently than nature intended and still rptain a total and beutiful dignity. All her life has been spent in a four-room eighth-floor apartment. She has never pawed a fish- he&d out of a garbage can, climbed a tree, fought or run from a dog, caught a bird, or made love on a fire escape un der a tawny moon. She loves to sit in the window and watch the tugs puff up and down the East River like busy boetles on quaint errands. How pleasant our own human lives would be if we could adjust so comfortably to the compromises our destinies demand. ! Cats don't come for free. It j takes time to cater to them and it takes money to care for them. I iigure that over the last dec- cats to sharpen their claws on What have I got in return for my $3,500? After all, Lady Dottie won't jump through a hoop, relrieve thrown sticks, or sit up and beg. Well, perhaps the fact she doesn't do any of those things is the reason I have gotten my, money's worth from Lady Dot- j tie. Her life is a lesson in philo- • sophy. She has shown it is possi- i ble to win your way in this I world without having to perform i shabby tricks to please anyone. I Cutting pastry into strips Cor cheese straws or some other use?
