HAMPTON Industrial Commercial Mortgage Loan Broker Starks Bldg 584-3159 Export Markets Trade Conference A Louisville toothpowder manufacturer sought advice from the U.S. Department of Commerce about opening a branch in Chicago. The department suggested instead that he go to Thailand. Today, his business is booming in Thailand, and the manufacturer has no more thoughts of going to Chicago. The story was told yesterday by Felix Turel, department's international trade specialist, at the Second Ohio Valley International Trade Conference at the Brown Hotel.

"There was only a husband and wife and two workers in the organization," Turel said, "and they came to me with $6,000 to spend." Three States Represented Businessmen came to the conference yesterday from Kentucky, Ohio and 1 Indiana. George L. Strike, president of American Laundry Machinery Industries, who gave the keynote address, said that the three states manufactured 10 per cent of the nation's exports which brought in $2 billion last year. "People are generally not greatly dependent on the export business," Strike said. But a Swiss manufacturer, for instance, "couldn't exist without it." Speakers at the conference agreed that fear prevented many manufacturers from becoming exporters.

An FCC official said it was the first time in the commission's history that a radio station had received such a fine.
