SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE 4, 1967 Sue Evans, Sacred Heart Grab Titles Waggener Wins; Lovell. Cooper Gain Emerson Cops French Title, Eyes Two More s. THE COURIER-JOURNAL TIMES, LOUISVILLE, KY. 7D I Si if ll 7' Alls. By PHIL STRAW Courlor-Journal Timet Staff Wrlttr Sue Evans climbed out of bed early yesterday morning because the day was something special the final rounds of the girls' state tennis tournament were being played at Central Park.

She had won the regional singles there only one week before and hadn't lost a match all year. But yesterday was extra special because she knew these things meant little or nothing unless she could win when it counted most. With all this in mind, it just had to be a beautiful day. But it was anything but beautiful. It was cold.

It was raining. It was bitter. And to dim the day even more, she had to wear that 6kimpy tennis outfit. TIM COOPER Stroke way to Boys State High School From Af and Ufl DUootchoa Roy Emerson of Australia, once again on the trail of the elusive "grand slam" of amateur tennis, yesterday won the second leg of the big prize, the French Championships at Paris. Emerson whipped his fellow countryman, Tony Roche, 6-1, 6-4, 2-6 and 6-2 to add the French crown to the Australian title he won earlier this year Should Emerson win the Wimbledon title and the United States singles crown at Forest Hills, N.Y., he would become the third man in history to capture the grand slam.

Don Budge of the U.S. did it in 1938 and Rod Laver of Australia won all four tourneys in 1962. France's Durr Wins The French title was the 12th major singles crown for the 30-year-old Emerson, who has won the Australian title six times, Wimbledon twice, the U.S. crown twice and the French title two times. Also at Paris, Francoise Durr of France and Gail Sherriff of Australia took the women's double title by defeating Annette Van Zyl of South Africa and Pat Walkden of Rhodesia 6-2, 6-2.

Today, Miss Durr, 24, meets Australia's Lesley Turner for the women's singles title. Her winning in doubles enabled France to have a champion of its own tournament for the first time since 1948. Mrs. Billie Jean King of Long Beach, and Owen Davidson of Australia reached the mixed doubles final against Mrs. Ann Haydon Jones of Great Britain and Ion Tiriac of Romania.

Mrs. King and Davidson defeated Christine Truman of Great Britain and Robert Howe of Australia 6-2, 6-4. By GARY SCHULTZ Courier-journal Timot Staff Wrlttr Waggener won the doubles title and Tim Cooper and Brad Lovell gained the singles final, but the real starring role in the Boys State High School Tennis Tournament yesterday belonged to 53-year-old Emmett Goranflo. Because of his efforts, the players got a chance to sandwich their matches between the rain that fell throughout Louisville. Tournament director Goranflo, a mathematics teacher and athletic director at Eastern High, started the day at 9 a.m.

in the West End. First he swept puddles of water off a court at Shawnee Park, then he drove to Chickasaw Park and went through the same procedure. But the rains came again, and Goranflo took off in search of a new site. He wound up in the East End, at Kentucky Southern College. Creason Helps, Too After laboring for.

45 minutes, he and Joe Creason, the father of one of the competitors, had three of Kentucky Southern's fast-drying hard courts in playable condition. So the Waggener duo, Cooper and Lovell went to work. Waggener's Bill Creason and Steve Thompson fell behind 5-2 in the first set of their doubles battle with Bellevue's Rick Denker and Robby Rothfuss. But at set point, Denker was told by Goranflo that he, would be penalized if he continued to foot-fault on service the Bellevue redhead had been stepping nearly a yard over the baseline each time. Denker, evidently unnerved by the Stiff Photo SUE EVANS State champ shows form senior finally outlasted Miss O'Bannon in the third set 8-6.

The weather played havoc with the entire tournament, letting up just enough to permit the matches to go on. The singles final, originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m., was moved back four hours. At 5:45 p.m., however, Miss Evans indicated she was ready to begin and the state showdown was finally underway. Miss Evans took the first four games of the opening set before Miss Brown could win her first. Miss Evans finally won the first set, 6-3.

The second set started off as if it, were going to be as long as the day was proving to be. Follows in Sister's Footsteps Miss Evans won the first game, Miss Brown the jsecond. Then the Presentation ace wrapped it up, winning five of the next eight games and taking home the state title that her older sister, Nancy, had won the year before. In the doubles it was the classy Sacred Heart team of Ann Segura and Ellen McGuire all the way. They defeated Highlands' Jnace Epp-stein and Debbie Perry 6-1, 6-2.

It was the first state tourney appearance for both girls. warning, proceeded to double-fault on the point, and Waggener came back to stave off three more set points and win the game. That made it 5-3, and Creason and Thompson took five of the next six to win 8-6. "That eighth game gave us the momentum we needed," young Creason said after he and Thompson walked off with the second set 6-1. It was Waggener's second straight State Tournament doubles crown.

Creason teamed with Doug DeMoss, now at East Tennessee State University, in last year's meet. In singles, meanwhile, Cooper, the unbeaten St. Xavier freshman, was making Dave Plummer of Waggener his 25th victim of the season. It was set for 9 a.m. and began at 2 p.m.. Miss Evans surprised the favored Miss Murphy and handed her a 6-1, 6-4 upset. She then had to wait for the other semifinal match on the adjoining court to finish. This one featured Somerset's Brenda Brown and Collegiate's Kit O'Bannon and it lasted for more than two hours.

Miss Brown took the first set 6-4, but Miss O'Bannon came right back in the second and won 8-6.
