THBiSALINA JOURNAL LIFE SUNDAY, MAY 17, 1998 T SPORTS MEDICINE porning runner breakfast ble?j Dear DR. PAUL DONOHUE North America Syndicate S|£ar Dr. Donohue: My hus- b#5a|l runs every morning, every d4y$jf the week, every week of the ye.af?. I don't ob- A.... ject'-He's in great sh'ape, but he skips breakfast, sa'ying he has no dine.. I thought breakfast was the most impor*^r.t meal of the day. Is he headed for trou- R.D. R.D.: After a night's sleep, liver glycogen — stored sugar — is cut Almost in half. " Glycogen is an important energy sourpe. By skipping breakfast, your husband is not running on a full fuel tank. However, if he runs for less than an hour, skipping breakfast won't make a huge difference. If, on the other hand, an athlete is scheduled for a competitive match in tHe morning, skipping breakfast Can nave a profound effect on his success. In such circumstances, the athlete ought to eat breakfast two to four hours before competition. A boiSfl' of cereal, some fruit and a sl&Se of toast restores depleted glyC&gen supplies. French toast or pajjcakes, not saturated with sygjip, are an equally good source fp'rejlycogen restoration. ; Sreakfast also enhances prob- ienCsolving faculties. To stay men- tal|j5rsharp, breakfast is essential. VJrlQUSEHOLD HINTS Dear Dr. Donohue: Comment, please, on hematuria that occurs from running or jogging. — W.M. Dear W.M.: Hematuria — bloody urine — is a red light, telling you to stop all activities until the source of bleeding is found. The simplest explanation for "sports hematuria" is breakage of tiny vessels in the kidney or urinary bladder. Every time the foot strikes the ground it sends a shock wave to the bladder and kidney and causes a few blood vessels to break. It's an innocent condition. Sports hematuria clears in a day or two of rest. Don't wave off bloody urine as innocent sports hematuria on your own. Urine blood is a symptom that calls for a doctor's input. Hematuria occurring after contact sports can indicate kidney trauma. In such instances, there should be no delay in getting to the bottom of the bleeding. Men older than 50 are another group for whom a delay in finding an answer is unacceptable, since urinary-tract cancer is more of an issue for them. Bloody urine lasting more than two days requires investigation, regardless of the athlete's age. Urinary-tract infections, kidney stones and defects in clot-formation mechanisms can cause prolonged bleeding. A little-known fact is that beets, blackberries, paprika and rhubarb can turn urine a blood- red color — a harmless change. fennis balls quiet airs at school iDear Heloise: I'd like to share a hiSdt with you. A while back some- or\£ wrote in stating a use for ten- niss balls on the legs of her walker. •We use old ten- *. nis balls on all our cliairs at our pub- litf '.school. So mych quieter than dragging through the sand and grit oijithe floors. We hdpfe* a multilevel building, so those of us with classes below are very happy! " One member of a tennis club collects HELOISE King Features * the used balls and donates them to the area schools, some to play with and, in our case, for peace and quiet. — Anne Rock, Westfield, Maine Dear Heloise: This hint is for anyone who has a cat that can't resist forbidden perches. I have fpund that the best way to keep my cat off counters is to set a mousetrap and place it UPSIDE DOWN on the forbidden area. When the cat jumps up, the trap snaps and the cat runs. After a while, the cat learns to stay away. — Cheryl Thomas, Hamilton, Ohio Dear Cheryl: Keeping the mousetrap upside down is very important, since you surely wouldn't want to injure your pet in any way. A mousetrap will definitely startle any cat and, hopefully, keep it off countertops. — Heloise Dear Heloise: I always recycle old umbrellas. When the wiring gives out, remove all of the spokes and use the cover when you shampoo your hair to protect your clothes, or use as a makeup protector. Just put your head through the hole in the top and fasten with a safety pin or any fastener. It sure works for me. — Elnora Shwartz, Pretty Prairie, Kan.
