A spokesman said a 2V6-hour artillery and infantry assault drove 250 to 300 militiamen from their position near Quang Ngai, about 80 miles south of Da Nang, and there was no word on casualties. Officials said radio contact was lost with the outpost near Da Nang, indicating that it also was overrun. It was manned by about 100 militiamen and defended a bridge that the Viet Cong blew up last month. The Saigon government sent a formal protest to the International Commission of Control and Supervision, accusing the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong of stepping up their military operations "in utter contempt of world public opinon." In Saigon, a 20-year-old, one- legged veteran, Le Quang Do, burned himself to death today during lunch hour in a park facing the Presidential Palace. It was the third self-immolation by a South Vietnamese veteran in Saigon in the past six weeks. His motive was not known. The government claimed the two previous suicides were anti-Communist protests. An hour later a 19-year-old girl burned herself to death in her apartment seven blocks away. Officials said she committed suicide because she had an incurable disease. In Cambodia, the military command said government forces have launched a new operation against the Khmer Rouge 40 miles northwest of Phnom Penh in an attempt to recapture some of the historic temple ruins at Angkor. Lung cancer is the leading killer among all the cancers causing about 72,000 deaths in the United States, in 1973, an increase of about 100 per cent since 1952. Compared to the late 1960s, fewer women are smoking today, but they form a larger percentage of all smokers and seem to find it harder to stop smoking. Also, the number of teenage girl smokers has nearly doubled between 1968-70, The World Almanac notes. LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Authorities are trying to identify the body of a woman found floating on a creek about 15 miles west of hefe Sunday, several hours after she apparently had been shot to death. Lt. Gene Walther of the Pulaski County sheriff's office said the woman was murdered Saturday night. Two women who had gone to Little Maumelle Creek to wash some vegetables found the body about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, he said. Walther said the victim had been shot in the lower left jaw by a large caliber weapon. She also had bruises and cuts on her head. Walther described the victim as being between 40 and 45 years old and 5 feet 4, She weighed 100 pounds and had "fairly short" auburn hair. She was wearing a blue-and white- striped blouse and brown slacks. The woman had one brown shoe on when her body was found, Walther said. "We did search the area within quite a radius and found another shoe approximately 30 miles upstream," he said. "We also found some other items which I don't want to identify at this time." The woman's body was taken to the University of Arkansas Medical Center for an autopsy. Once United Geologists believe that in the Pleistocene era the English Channel was only a gulf and England was joined to Europe by a land bridge. The sea cut through the bridge, probably some 10,000 years ago, to form the Strait of Dover. [iininiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirmiiiiiiniiiiimiiriimiJiimmiiij U.S.D.A.
