Sacred Heart Devotions on the First Friday of every month at 6:30 p.m. R for your child's safety If a rattler strikes your child, will you know exactly what to do? Dr. Albert H. Domm, child safety specialist and medical director of the Prudential Insurance Company, urges parents to become familiar with emergency snake-bite procedures, especially now that the rattlesnake season is upon us. "The most important thing to remember is to keep the victim quiet and lying down," Dr. Domm said. "The worst thing you can do is panic," he said. "Ex- Dr. Albert cited activity H. Domm accelerates the flow of blood through the arteries, carrying the venom to the heart," he warned. "Do not rush off to the hospital. Call the emergency ambulance and let help come to you," he advised. Dr. Domm said that if the accident occurs while on a camping trip or in a situation where it will take some time for help to arrive, place a tourniquet just above the bite. Make two lateral cuts above the bite and suck the venom out. People who live in hilly areas should be particularly cautious. Danger from rattlesnakes is at its height during the warm, dry months of the year when snakes come into populated areas for water. "If you see a snake in your yard that you suspect is poisonous, call the fire department," Dr. Domm said. PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY A search foe factors other than fluoride that may help prevent tooth decay is being carried out by Dr. Re/so • G. Schamschula, a visiting scientist at the National Institute of Dental Research. Dr. Schamschula has been studying isolated populations in New Guinea, some with virtually no tooth decay and others with rampant caries. None of the groups has drinking water with sufficient natural fluoride to influence decay prevention. The incidence of dental caries rises from near zero in the • New Guinea lowlands to rampant tooth decay in the mountains, Dr. Schamschula points out. Soil analyses to discover the substances that may protect against decay are being conducted. Evidence is mounting that the formation of plaque--a sticky film on teeth caused by masses of bacteria-is the key agent in gum disease. During a normal day, the number of bacteria on tooth surfaces increases through multiplication. If the bacteria are not removed by good oral hygiene, they contribute to the growth of plaque- and tht beginning of gum destruction. ***** For those with- special problems in dental hygiene such as tooth hypersensitivity, researchers have come up with a dentifrice called, Sensodyne. People who might otherwise find toothbrushing difficult or even impossible with regular toothpastes are able with Sensodyne to perform essential home care. (Many dentists report that a special toothbrush, the Sensodyne Gentle, also is an aid to hypersentivity patients in toothbrushing because of its superfine, soft nylon bristles,.)
