TllAY MUI.T. si 21, 1963 15 UK Not Deceived By Ole Miss' Statistics 'lliii OHiiSll-K LOl II. I KY. TRI-CITY OLDS By LARRY BOECK Courier-Journal Writer LEXINGTON, producer Sam Goldwyn, the phrase-twisting Ed Diddle of the movie industry, put it: "A verbal contract ain't worth the paper it's written on." Similarly, football statistics aren't worth the paper they're mimeographed on unless they're interpreted. So Bob Ford, assistant Kentucky coach, is warning the Wildcats not to take the passing statistics of Mississippi's 34-14 conquest of Memphis State at their face value.

The Rebels, who face UK here Saturday night at 8 o'clock in a Southeastern OLD-FASHIONED USED CAR SALE senior tackle Stan Hindman as the Rebel who'll probably give UK's linemen the most trouble. "He's listed as an offensive tackle," said Ford, "but he'll also play defense, I believe, if he's needed." Last year, during a disappointing 5-4-1 season in which UK inflicted one of the losses, Ole Miss was vulnerable to the pass. With UK quarterback Rick Norton throwing better than ever, Ford was asked about the Ole Miss defense, particularly the secondary. "Memphis State did hit its passes pretty good (seven of 25 for 145 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown toss)," conceded Ford. "Ole Miss has changed its 1964 defense, put its team speed in the defensive platoon and has more experience.

"Safety man Bruce Newell is a sophomore but all the other defensive backs and the linebackers are experienced." At Kentucky, meanwhile, the men who played in the 7-0 victory over Missouri worked out lightly in sweat clothes. "Because of the splendid way our boys played at Missouri, especially the defense, we're working lightly," said coach Charlie Bradshaw, "and the only way anybody is going to get hurt is to stumble down some stairs. I'm not going to take any chances on them getting hurt on the practice field." Orioles Triumph A's Halt Twins 8-2, Delay Pennant Rush Ok Conference game that already is a complete sellout, traditionally have an explosive passing attack. But against Memphis State they completed only three of 10 for a sparse 24 yards. However, they gained a mammoth 276 yards rushing the ball.

And that's the key statistic, said Ford, who scouted the Rebels. "You know, coach Johnny Vaught (of Ole Miss.) said before the season began that he believes in throwing 30 times a game," said Ford. "But he said he first wanted to improve his ground game. And, buddy, he did against Memphis State." Rebels Roll To 34-7 Lead Behind the running of senior quarterback Jimmy Heidel, primarily a defensive back in previous seasons, and tailback Walt Dennis, the Rebels sprinted to a 34-7 half time lead. "As a result, the Rebs didn't have to pass much, and I suppose that at halftime they were told not to throw," said Ford.

"They wouldn't want SEC scouts in the press box to get any information on the passing game." Heidel is primarily a running quarterback; he's a 100-yard sprinter on the Ole Miss track team. But he also can throw, Ford said. "Dennis is a great running back with exceptional speed," he said. "Don Street, their 205-pound fullback, probably is the best sophomore back in the conference. "Wingback David Wells, the boy from Madisonville, had a good night against Memphis State." Coach Vaught, speaking to 182 members of the Lexington Quarterback Club over a conference telephone hookup between 11 state cities with UK booster groups, said: "Wells is looking good and we're hoping he'll have a fine year.

Wells is a senior. "Wells and Dennis are probably the two top receivers of Ole Miss," said Ford, head defensive coach for the Wildcats. Only 537 fans turned out in the rain and gloom to watch the game, the smallest crowd in the five years the Twins have played at Minneapolis-St. Paul. Orioles 4, Angels 2 Steve Barber picked up his fourth straight victory with eighth-inning relief help from Stu Miller as Baltimore scored a 4-2 victory over California before only 945 fans at Los Angeles. Baltimore scored all its runs in the sixth inning off Angel rookie Jim Mc-Glothlin, who was making his major league debut.

The Orioles collected five hits in the sixth a double by Luis Aparicio, plus singles by Russ Snyder, Boog Powell, Brooks Robinson and Jerry Adair. Paul Schaal doubled home both Angel runs in the eighth off Barber. Indians 5, Tigers 4 Max Alvis led off the 14th inning with his fourth hit of the game and scored on Ohico Salmon's bases-loaded pinch single to give Cleveland a 5-4 victory over Detroit. Alvis singled off Orlando Pena, then raced to third as first basemen Norm Cash missed Pena's pickoff attempt. Pena walked Vic Davalillo and Fred Whitfield intentionally, loading the bases, before Salmon batted for Lu Clinton.

The Tigers had tied the score 44 in the ninth on singles by Bill Freehan, Don Demeter and Mickey Stanley. Cleveland's Pedro Gonzalez was tossed out of the game after he charged Detroit relief pitcher Larry Sherry in the fifth inning and swung twice at the pitcher with his bat. Sherry backpedaled out of the way, but the two players then grappled as both benches emptied. Teammate Al Luplow finally restrained Gonzalez and the umpires quickly restored order. Rollalong Wins At Latonia For Third Victory In Row Special to The Courier-Journal FLORENCE, Ky.

It was only the second defeat for the Twins in their last 11 games.

The loss kept Minnesota's "magic" number for wrapping up the pennant at three. Any combination of Twins victories and Baltimore defeats totaling three will do it. The Orioles play at Minnesota today and Wednesday. Hunter yielded a pair of home runs to Don Mincher his 20th and 21st of the season but Minnesota managed only two other hits, both singles, off him. Wyatt relieved after Frank Quilici singled leading off the eighth.

Hunter bested Jim (Mudcat) Grant, who was bidding to become the American League's first 20-game winner. Grant was slugged for three hits and three runs in the third inning and Larry Stahl homered in the fifth. The A's made it a runaway with four runs in the ninth against Garry Roggen-burk and Bill Pleis. The game's start was delayed 1 hour and 8 minutes by rain. Only UUU Fischer-Geller Match Halted After 49 Moves HAVANA, Cuba (AP) Bobby Fischer of New York and Russia's Ewfim Geller adjourned their 17th-round match in the Capablanca Chess Tournament yesterday after 49 moves. Fischer, the U.S. grandmaster, is competing through a telegraphic hookup from New York because the U.S. State Department refused to allow him to travel to Cuba for the tournament. He remained in third place behind Borislav Ivkov of Yugoslavia and Vasily Smyslov of Russia.

It was the second straight day that Fischer and Geller had to adjourn. They played through 41 moves Sunday.
