They were surounded for their own protection. Preceeded by two jeeps armed with 50-caliber machine guns and an armed helicopter hovering overhead, the company arrived at the theater, fitted with rows of sandbags for seats.

The theater is in an aircraft hangar here at the Bien Hoa air base where a little over a month ago Viet Cong mortars damaged 45 planes. At each side of the stage two Military Policemen stood with rifles at the ready. A whole paratroop battalion, bivouacked nearby, was on the alert to protect company and audience. The 70-member troupe, holding its first rehearsal in preparation for opening night tonight, took it all in stride and even showed the military a few new wrinkles. It seems the Army decided to issue Duko-PItt (color) Scoutln Rtport (color) World Sorlti (color) World Strltt (color) jungle fatigues to the entire company After disposing of the trousers, the ballerinas found that the jacket made an excellent rehearsal outfit to wear at half mast over a pair of leotards.

Off-duty airmen flocking to the hangar found it a delightful outfit also. The girls were issued the smallest size fatigue uniform extra small, short. Even so, it fitted most of them like a sack. One curvaceous dancer improvised a fetching costume by wearing the jacket as a sarong wrapped around her hips. Salt Pills Keep 'Em Going The company ran through the entire show despite the afternoon heat, gulping down salt pills to keep going.

"Hello, Dolly," the big production number with Mary Martin in the title part, stopped the show, as usual, but so did a flight of 15 helicopters as they flew over on a combat mission and drowned out the orchestra. Producer David Merrick said he especially liked the idea of having two armed guards at each side of the stage. "Love to try that at one of my openings in New York," he said. "Imagine what effect they'd have on the critics." 10 11 12 "2 1 I 6 7 8 World Sorlti Three persons were injured, a car smashed, a tractor-trailer scraped and a yard damaged early yesterday morning after a high-speed chase through the West End, police reported. Police said a car driven by Sam Davis, 24, of 3816 W.

Broadway, led them on a 15-block chase at about 2 a.m. Davis, taken to General Hospital with a broken jaw and leg and facial cuts, was charged with reckless driving, speeding and attempting to elude police. One of two passengers In his car, Mrs. Mary Humphrey, 37, of 3838 Bohne, was in General Hospital with facial cuts and possible internal injuries. The sec ond passenger, Richard Ferris, 33, of 2213 Cedar, was treated and released.

Police Give Account Here's what happened, according to the police: Davis was spotted at 20th and Broadway driving at high speed. Police took up the chase. They said the car cut in and out of side streets and ran several stop signs. Then the went west on Del Park Terrace. At 34th, traveling at some 60 miles an hour, the car ran a stop sign and was struck in the left side aby a northbound tractor-trailer.

The car ran into a yard at 614 S. 34th and came to a rest against the foundation of the house of William J. Leonard. Police identified the driver of the tractor-trailer as James H. Gibbs, 61, of Clarksville, Ind.

Court Agreement Provides 700 Seats For Theater Opening Actors Theatre of Louisville, will get the 700 Theater seats it needs for the opening of its new playhouse Thursday under terms of an agreement yesterday in Jefferson Circuit Court. The nonprofit theater will remove the seats from the old Airway Theater, 1053 Bardstown Road, after depositing $620 with the court receiver. Fillmore S. Sampson and Ruth M. Sampson, owners of the Airway property but not the seals, claim Actors Theatre owes that amount of rent on the seats.

The receiver will hold the deposit until the court rules on that claim. Actors Theatre is moving from Fourth Street to the old Illinois Central Station at Seventh and River. Louisville Safely Director Kenneth J. Newman last night said that he is "guardedly optimistic" that the murder of Miss Alberta O. Jones soon will be solved.

"In the last few days," he said "we have discovered some evidence which leads us to believe we are on the threshold of solving this mystery." Newman made these remarks at the beginning of his eulogy to Miss Jones at a memorial dinner held last night at Stouffer's Louisville Inn by the Independent Voters Association (IVA). He refused to comment further on the case. Miss Jones' body was found Aug. 5 in the Ohio River near Fontaine Ferry Park. She was a prosecutor for Newman when he was Judge of Domestic Relations Court.

She also founded IVA which encourages voting for individual candidates rather than political parties. Newman said, "Miss Jones exemplified all that is good in mankind. Her conduct in court reflected dignity and she possessed a fierce and constant desire to render every man his due within the sacred bounds of justice. "She knew," he continued, "that justice and wisdom must walk together I 8:30 ABC-Channel 32: Lawrence Welk, color The Blenders sing "The Wayward Wind." 8:30 NBC-Channel 3: Get color Secret agents Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 (Don Adams and Barbara Feldon) investigate a department store toyland serving as a front for KAOS for smuggling secrets out of the country. 8:30 CBS-Channel 11: Trials of O'Brien Phil Foster plays the kingpin of a garbage racket in "Never Bet on Anything That Talks," story of an English bookie charged with the murder of an accountant.
