Brownback files for Senate seat By The Associated Press TOPEKA — Sen. Sam Brownback filed Friday fqr Republican nomination to his first full six-year term in the U.S. Senate, a seat he won in 1996 to fill out the. last two years of former Sen. Bob Dole's term. Also, state Sen. Paul Feleciano of Wichita dis-,. closed Friday that he will declare his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to the U.S. Senate on May 27. Brownback paid the $1,336 filing fee in the secretary of state's office and filled out a filing document to put his name on the Aug. 5 primary election ballot. ..,.. He became the first person to file for the Republican or Democratic nomination. Brownback, 41, said he would "frame the campaign around ideas, ideals and character — the things necessary for another American century." Brownback, who served for six years as state agriculture secretary and two years as a member of the U.S. House before being elected to the Senate, said" he would continue to push for "smaller government, a new tax code and the preservation and protection of Social Security."
