Depending on the humidity of the outside air, it may take weeks to dry out the inside of the house. Reduce the humidity indoors by opening up windows, doors, closets, and cabinet doors. Use fans, dehumidifiers, and desiccants. Kitty litter made of clay functions well as a desiccant and is readily available. After the drying-out, a plastic vapor barrier on the ground under a house will reduce the relative humidity of the soil. •Any heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems that have been submerged should be disinfected with chlorine bleach. Remove and replace all insulting materials, duct work, gas and oil appliances that have been submerged. Legionnaire's Disease, which is essentially caused by HVAC systems that are not cleaned regularly, kills 35,000 people each year in the U.S. •Remove mold spores and particles from the house with vacuum cleaning and air filters. •Continue a vigilant inspection of the building for signs of mold colonies which may be hidden from view in wall cavities. Look for water stains, moisture problems, musty odor, visibly growing molds inside picture frames and at windows. Check baseboards, window sills, the bottom of walls, wall paper, especially in bathrooms and kitchens. •Report any unusual physical symptoms to your physician as possibly related to recent water damage in your home. Highly toxic molds are often invisible to the naked eye and can only be detected with air sampling. Remember: A moldy building responding quickly to water problems and medical expenses is not a health environment. By damage, you may prevent health in the future.
