THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL FRI., MARCH 20-SAT., MARCH 21, 1997—B-3 Time out Newsday Crossword «;**• lay out of married kids' bedroom ., Dear Ann Landers: My son and daughter-in-law (I'll call them "Mike" and "April") have a 17-month-old child. Mike is adamant about not having any -more children. April would like 1o have another one but has said . -In the past the decision would have to be mutual. April's parents have been .pressuring them to have another ;child. Last week, April's mother, •who was obviously very pleased, iteld me Mike and April are going to'start trying in August to have another baby. When I expressed [surprise, she said with a wink, . -"April is going to try, but Mike • .'doesn't know about it yet." • I It occurred to me that April rimy stop taking her birth control •rims without Mike's knowledge. Is have made it a practice not to interfere with the kids' business unless I'm asked for an opinion. However, this is a major matter, ahd I feel obligated to inform my sbn. I What would you do if you were in my position, Ann? -- riancho Cordova, Calif. Dear Rancho: I would stay out of the couple's bedroom and medicine chest. It's enough that April's parents are pressuring he;r. Don't add to the mix. •Dear Ann Landers: You've printed many letters about well- meaning people who can be . insensitive and thoughtless. It isfl't always at funerals, either. ,Just try being in a wheelchair. Fdr some unknown reason, peo- pl$ who normally are intelligent arhd thoughtful blurt out statements like these: "What hap!! . pejyd to you?" "What did you ANN LANDERS do to deserve this?" "Is it temporary?" "At least you walked most of your life." My all-time favorite is "Can you have sex when you're in a wheelchair?" to which I now answer, "Well, it's a lot like trying to do it while standing in a hammock - a bit difficult because it requires perfect balance." They usually look stunned, and then, they laugh. When I learned I had multiple sclerosis, the thing I dreaded most was the reality that I might have to use a wheelchair some day. I needn't have been concerned. My power wheels are great for shopping in these new huge malls, and I never complain that my feet hurt. Waiting in long lines is never a problem. People are always kind about letting me in. Our tiny granddaughter loves getting rides. When she climbs up the back of the chair to give me a kiss, my heart just melts. She will never fear people who are different or in need of assistance. My infirmity is a real learning experience for her. I have come to the conclusion that humor is the greatest weapon against ignorance. Each encounter with a clod is a chance to educate someone and make a new friend. A great deal of my inspiration comes from your column, Ann. Thank you. « Mrs. WJ.K. in Los Angeles Dear Mrs. W.J.K.: You certainly are the poster girl for the wheelchair brigade. Thank you for a letter that educated and encouraged a lot of people today. Dear Ann Landers: My mom is 73. She has a friend the same age who invites herself over to visit about twice a week. "Beatrice" has been stealing small objects regularly. Mom is aware of this, but she feels sorry for her and doesn't know what to do. I'd appreciate some advice — Ohio Daughter Dear Daughter: The woman sounds sick. If your mom wants Beatrice to continue visiting in her home, she should not let the woman out of her sight. When Beatrice begins to wander, your mom should accompany her. Gem of the Day: Sign over a bar: If you are drinking to forget, please pay in advance. Is alcohol ruining your life or the life of a loved one? "Alcoholism: How to Recognize It, How to Deal With It, How to Conquer It" can turn things around. Send a self-addressed, long, business-size envelope and a check or money order for $3.75 (this includes postage and handling) to: Alcohol, c/o Ann Landers, P.O. Box 11562, Chicago, 111 60611-0562. One judge made a correct decision ' -Dear Ann Landers: I was impressed by Judge Ted Poe's handling of a drunken driving Occident. We need more like him. I hope you will share this article with your readers. -- Pleasantly Surprised in Houston Dear Houston: According to an article by Stefanie Asin of the Houston ^hronicj^, J[udjge;,Poe ordered strictj^irbbatiton condi- t^JJis for a 19-year-old who had killed a father of two and their rtanny. The teen-ager was a senior in high school when his speeding car slammed into a van driven by the 45-year-old father. The man and the nanny, age 28, w<ere killed. The man's wife sur- v£ved the crash. * The teen-ager pleaded no con- t^st to intoxicated manslaughter charges, and after serving six . rrfbnths in jail, he was released on !(•} years' probation, with these conditions imposed by the judge: r-Attend boot camp. -; i -Erect a cross and a Star of . David at the accident site, and maintain the symbols and the ' area around them. Carry a sign for five days outside a bar that reads, "I killed two people while driving drunk." .Carry pictures of the victims in his wallet for 10 years. Refrain from driving for 10 years. Speak to students at his high school about his experience. Observe an autopsy of a per- son killed in a drunken driving accident. Send $10 every week for 10 years to a memorial fund in the names of the victims. Place flowers at their graves on their birthdays for 10 years. The wife of the man who died agreed to all of these conditions and wants the teen-ager to,.teachjl others about the nazaras of'j: drunken driving. She said he can J do more for the community out of jail than he can inside. "It's appropriate for him to be exposed," she said. "People locked away in prison can forget about it." What a sensible decision. We need more judges like Ted Poe. Instead of warehousing prisoners, we should educate them and see that they become contributing members of society. Dear Ann Landers: That letter you printed about the man who was self-conscious about his balding head, until he realized it was no big deal, reminded me of a rhyme I composed some years ago. It might help other bald people lighten up on themselves. •• Charles Grove, Reedsport, Ore. Archibald Pate Archibald Pate is a marvelous sight, For he hasn't a hair on his head! His dome is as slick and shiny and bright As a finely polished meteorite; His follicles, dead as a cold winter night.
