JAMESCLEM Governor DeWitt Clinton fulfilled the dream of Governor Morris of the First Continental Congress by opening the Erie Canal on October 26, 1825 From Dreaming to Digging—America Showed The World What Free Men Can Do ... T he Erie Canal, one of America's greatest achievements, was once called the EIGHTH wonder of the world. At the turn of the 19th Century, a newly-free and democratic America—dared to think far beyond their time . . , the Erie Canal became a symbol of a young country's hope and belief in itself. What vision! The Great Lakes were linked with the oceans of the world in 1825, and Surveyor General Caldwell Colden summed it up in his dedication address: "Americans can never forget that we have built the longest canal, in the least time with the least experience, for the least money, to the greatest public benefit". The Erie Canal's glory—from 1820 to 1850—was a triumphant era, thirty years of change and accomplishment . . . the American's had shown the world what FREE men can do.
