Hayes Runs' By DAVID Hayes Jones, a New York scared for the first time in speedster feels it's making prepares for the October Oly The 25-year-old Eastern Michigan graduate interprets the only two failures of his amazing record as turning points. First, he failed to win a gold medal in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. Then last summer, he was "left in the blocks" in the famed "double race" Haves Jones in the United States-Russia dual meet in Moscow. "I've learned a lot in four years," Jones says.

"I know I can't treat the Olympics like any other dual meet. That's the most important thing I learned from placing third at Rome." But what makes Jones run or, at least, run Track in' On faster now? Font "Winning so many races and always being in front can make you complacent lull you into taking first places for granted. So you have to scare yourself once in a while to get that added incentive. In the "double race" last summer in Moscow, Jones made a false start, never reaching the first hurdle. However, the other three entries from the U.

S. and two from Russia completed the race. So judges ordered the hurdles event rerun. "I had a menial block in the second race," Jones explained. "Never having com ilaBBBSaSSWBt Koslowski and Noel Carroll captured the varsity mile relay, edging out the University of Kentucky quartet.

His failure at Moscow "scared me so much" that Jones turned over a new leaf. In his first indoor meet this season at San Francisco, he won the 60-yard high hurdles in 7.2 seconds. Even Jones admitted that was "pretty good time this early.

I usually open at 7.3." Last night he won the 45-yard high hurdles at the Boston K. of C. meet in 5.5 seconds. Calhoun Retired Lee Calhoun, who won at Rome in 1960, has retired so Jones apparently has the hurdles field to himself. He rates Roy Hicks of the Army and Paul Jones his biggest indoor threats.

Hicks finished third to Jones in the A.A.U. outdoor championships last year. And Paul Jones? He's Hayes' prodigy. They work out daily at Wayne State where Paul is a student. "Paul is altcays beside vie after two hurdles." Hayes points out, "and then I beat him by just a step.

If anyone's going to catch me, I hope it's Paul. His potential hasn't been tapped." If Hayes sounds like an indoor promoter, he is.
