KiiiTOit JfBwg: The current campaign will end in the coming "crisis." The present congress is not likely to do anything toward solving the prob- em of harmonizing the conflict of antagonistic interests which evolution is constantly giving birth to. In both branches of the "national legislature" the time and talent of the "wisdom of the nation" is taken up with "slate" in preference to the "state." The Democrats are figuring for the machine" and the Ropublicans are maneuvering for the "flank" of the position. The mighty problem of the equities" is no more thought of than the meaning of the sphinx. It seems as if they were imbued with the sentiment, "After us, the deluge." The overshadowing danger of the great fact of the antagonism of interests is apparently ignored entirely. Like the infatuated reprobates of Sodom and Gomorrah they are utterly oblivious of the rain of sonBuming fire in store for them unless they relent and Cpent for their transgressions. They play at "battledore and shuttlecock" with the vital questions of finance, of transportation, of taxation, of land values, and of universal equity, as if the very existence of civilization itself did not depend on their solution. The coming campaign willsurpass in intensity all that have occurred since 1800. The principles involved are in their ultimate analysis similar. The candidates for the presidency will probably be thesame in number (four), the people's convictions as firm, and their intelligence superior. It will be n battle of giants, and it will be a drawn battle. SWINTON.
