Rosado allowed two runs and three hits in six-plus innings. Athletics 8, Tigers 2 OAKLAND, Calif -The Oakland Athletics are built for power, with five players who hit more than 20 homers last season. Little did they expect that 5-foot-9 Frank Menechino would be their leading slugger after three games. Menechino, playing in place of the injured Randy Velarde, hit his second homer in three games and added a run-scoring groundout in a three-run third as the As defeated the Detroit Tigers. Menechino, who spent seven seasons in the minors before making his major league debut with the As last September, is tied with Jason Giambi for the team lead in homers and tops the As with a 1.100 slugging percentage control.

He walked No. 7 hitter Richard Hidalgo and No. 8 hitter Tony Eusebio in a three-run third ahead of Lima's grounder that glanced off first baseman Kevin Young's glove for a two-run error. Padres 4, Mets 0 NEW YORK Woody Williams kept Mets hitters in a deep freeze by pitching six shutout innings and the San Diego Padres beat New York for their first win of the season. Williams (1-0) and relievers Carlos Almanzar and Trevor I loffman shut down a team that was hitting only .177 in its first three games.

But Bobby Jones (0-1) struggled in his first start since last May 22, lasting just 2 2-3 innings and getting booed when left trailing by four was. Bret Bwne hit an RBI double to key a three-run second right-field seats. Zimmerman, who has lost four straight decisions since winning the first nine of his career, then gave up an RBI single and was pulled after walking Jose Valentin. Frank Thomas greeted reliever Francisco Cordero with a two-run double for an 11-7 lead, and Paul Konerko drove him in with a single. Chad Curtis led off the ninth with a homer off Bob Howry.

Texas, which scored 10 and 12 runs the first two games, had only four singles through four innings against Jim Parque. Then Parque suddenly lost his command, loading the bases with no outs then giving up a two-run single to Ivan Rodriguez and a three-run homer to Rafael rfi it i triple for the second straight night, but got a solo homer for his first hit as a Red and threw Marquis Grissom out at home as he tried to score on a fly in the seventh. Pokey Reese had four of the Reds' 13 hits with two singles and two doubles. Eddie Taubensee also had four hits for Cincinnati After getting a 3-3 tie and a 5-1 loss while wearing red sleeves, the Reds went back to the black ones that they had success with at home last year. Their last game in black was the 5-0 loss to the Mets in the tiebreaker for the NL wild card in October.

Steve Parris started that game and lost. Astros 11, Pirates 2 PITTSBURGH Jose Li as Griffey remains hitless Palmeiro. Palmeiro also hit a three-run homer Tuesday night Chicago built its early lead against Rangers starter Darren Oliver, making his return after a 1 12 years in St. Louis. He allowed seven runs on seven hits in 4 2-3 innings with four walks and two strikeouts.

Royals 4, Hue Jays 3 TORONTO Joe Randa homered twice and Jose Rosado allowed just two hits in six innings, leading the Kansas City Royals over the Toronto Blue Jays. Randa, who drove in three runs, homered in the second inning for Kansas City's first run, then made it 3-0 in the seventh with a homer off the facing of SkyDome's third deck in left field. He walked with the bases loaded in the eighth against Paul Quantrill, the reliever's third straight walk. Rosado (1-0) took a shutout into the seventh before a walk to Carlos Delgado followed by Tony Batista's RBI double off the glove of ma shook off control problems to pitch seven effective innings and Daryle Ward homered in the Houston Astros' victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Astros, 1-5 in Three Rivers Stadium last season, have outscored the Pirates 16-4 in the first two games.

Lima (1-0), a 21-game winner last season, walked two and gave up three singles in the first, including a hit by Aramis Ramirez that drove in two runs. An extra-base hit might have driven Lima from the game, but he settled down to finish up with six shutout innings. "Endurance is going to be the key for those two." Garcia and Wallace are established PCL pitchers out of the bullpen, as are Cory Bailey, Mike Diorio and Mike Villano. "I feel good about our 'pen," Jewett said.

"There are a lot of guys down there that can close games out, a lot of capable guys. Ideally, you'd like to have more than one lefty Wallace. But when it's time to build a team, you take the best available, and I think we've done that." When it's time to pick up the bats, Nashville ought to be able to hold its own. Darryl Brinkley, Ivan Cruz and Ray Montgomery will typically anchor the batting order from the 3-4-5 spots, giving the Sounds three players that hit over .320 in the PCL last year and combined for 55 home runs and 208 RBI.
