1952 TOR DAILY NEWS PAGE 3 Animals Have Suffered Enough From Our Gossip By SAUL PETT (for HAL BOYLE) NEW YORK about time we stopped all this careless slander, unfounded cliches and irresponsible talk. About animals, I Despite the gossip you may hear, a cichlid remains extremely ji fut to his Among their own kind, wolves aren't particularly cruel or ous. A doVe isn't especially peaceful, there is nothing more gruesome than a dove pecking another doVe to death. A fox is not so cunning. In fact, he's much more stupid than a wolf or dog.

Fish Aren't Cold-Blooded. Fish are not "cold-blooded." On falling in love, some fish dance and whirl madly, light up, change colors and generally carry on like a pinball machine hitting the jackpot. Wild geese fall in love at first sight. These are some of the misconceptions I found righted in an amazing book called "King Solomon's Ring," written by Konrad Z. Lorenz, Austrian naturalist.

the roe-deer is not gentle. "One Wrf the most disgusting, ruthless and murderers," says Lorenz. A caged lion does not look as much like a caged lion as you might think. He is "about the laziest of the predatory beasts," Says Lorenz, and seldom is seen restlessly up and down a cage. The lion, incidentally, gets that majestic look from the fact that as a hunter of large animals of the open plains he is forever studying things in the distance and ignoring items in the foreground.

But don't get careless, if you happen to be in the foreground. Eagles Are Stupid. the eagle may be very proud but he's also very stupid. Even has trouble finding his way home. The golden eagle has less sense than a chicken.

The American bald-headed 1 eagle is not particularly popular among tenants of large -aviaries. He's "strong and horribly overbearing," says Lorenz. Some of the world's most faithful dogs have wolf blood in them. Also, it's not cruel to keep a dog in a ci.ty apartment. "His happiness depends largely how much time you can spend with him and upon, how often he may accompany you- on an errand," Lorenz points out.

"He does not mind, waiting for hours at your -ifinaljy, r.e\warded POSTURE would take more than "Eight Iron Men," in which Mary Castle stars, to deny her the title of "Miss Curve-X." According to sponsors of Better Posture Week, perfect posture will give any woman a figure like Mary's. by a'ten-minute walk at your side." Most people going to zoos, says the naturalist, don't pity the right animals. Foxes a'nd wolves housed in small cages suffer terribly from frustration. Anthropoid apes can become literally 'bored to death." Being caged is very hard on gray parrots and cockatoos since in their. natural free state they are Lf'mentally and bodily uncommonly Now, don't you feel like a skunk? New Process of "Canning Fresh Milk Developed RIDGELAND, Wis.

latest advance in the modern marvel of canned fresh milk was made here today with dedication of the new processing plant of International Milk Producers, Chicago. Formally thrown into operation 'vas a maze of stainless steel equipment high temperature pasteurizers and modern homogenizing apparatus. Here whole milk, four hours or less from the farm milkhouse, is made sterile and canned in a process that was de- at its inception revolution- in dairy marketing. We are certain we can put fresh milk and cream into tin cans to stay fresh for at least six months," said the company. The first output of the plant is destined for to prove that the product can be shipped long distances without controlled refrigeration and still retain the full, natural, fresh milk flavor.

The Cuba shipments will be in eight ounce cans and will be earmarked for a school lunch program. 3 4t the dedication in this Dunn village today, visitors sanv pled the product milk many months old. Few, if any, could between it and fresh milk. The firm is buying milk in this area from 200 farmers who have in- illed the special vacuum tanks pipe lines necessary in the ocess. The milk is delivered to plant at natural temperatures within four hours to go through the sterile canning process.

The process was developed by John H. Stambaugh, chairman of board of International milk and Dr. Roy H. Graves rmerly a scientist with the fed eral Department of Agriculture. Currently, canned fresh milk is selling at a premium over bottled whole milk or cream.

Verage today on a red fox killed in the town of rish, Langlade County. Actors Are Getting Into the Political Arena Once Again By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD a long silence, actors are again getting into the political arena. During the FDR years, the acting breed was vocal in support of candidates and issues. In era immediately following the war, widespread political activity in Hollywood was lacking. The reason: too ma'hy actors had been stung by supporting the wrong causes.

Now the issues appear more dearly defined, and Hollywood names are again for the campaigners. "Stars like Irene Dunne, George Murphy, Rosalind Russell and Dick Powell are booming for Eisenhower. The Stevenson bandwagon has drawn such adherents as Ethel Barrymore, Robert Ryan, Ava Gardner and the Humphrey Bogarts. Although actors have been active campaigners, they have seldom run for office. There are a few notable exceptions.

Mrs. Douglas Elected. Two-years ago, Congress had two former acting figures. One was Helen Gahagan Douglas, Democratic Representative from California's 14th distric. The wife of actor Melvyn Douglas, she was a stage and operetta star and appeared in one movie, "She." Mrs.

Douglas was defeated in a Senate race by Richard Nixon, who has lately been in the news. The other actor in Congress was John Lodge (R-Conn), now the governor of his state and a leader in the fight to nominate Eisenhower. He played in many films of the early '30's, including "The Scarlet Empress" with Marlene Dietrich (now for Stevenfeon) and "The Little Colonel" with Shirley Temple (advocacy unnannounced). Character actor Albert Dekker served a term in the California legislature, but said he gave up politics because he couldn't afford it'." His pay as a representative was $1,200 a year, about what he'could earn in a week in the movies. Another politico performer is Jimmy Davis, former governor of Louisiana, who has appeared in cowboy pictures.

Another western performer, Stuart Hambler, is currently running for President on the Prohibition ticket. Others have toyed with politics but haven't made the plunge. In 1950, Edward Arnold announced he would run for the Senate, but backed down a week later. After the war, James Stewart was urged to run for the Senate from Pennsylvania. He stuck to acting.

Heat Stealers! Your Home May Have a Number those large picture windows, fancy fireplaces, sweeping staitcases and basement amusement rooms that homemakefs plan for their new homes can become heat ers in the winter, heating engineers warn. Wise planning in the placements of heat cohtrollig thermostats will offset the danger, however. Picture windows, according to the engineers, should preferably face nofth or east. If they don't, they should have a overhang of eaves or porch roof. Thermostats are often placed in the living room.

In that case, the southern or western exposure that gives the living'room a sunny look may cause occupants in the rest of the house to freeze. The same thing happen the living room is warmed by a fireplace. To offset 'that're- sult, the engineers suggest installing separate thermostats in sleeping, living and working quarters.

Decorative stairways can steal heat from downstairs and cause drafts if they are not blocked by doors. But open stairs can be made comfortable by installation of an additional thermostat or a supersensitive electronic type on the stair landing to equalize the temperature on the two floors. It has been suggested that another, thermostat be installed' in the basement amusement room to take care of uncomfortably chilly spring days, which, cause the basement, below the frost line, to remain cool when the weather is warm above' ground. Improve Fiber Rugs With Thinned Paint The fiber rugs used on porch floors frequently become faded and drab looking. These can be greatly improved and given new color with the aid of regular house paint, thinned with turpentine: Use about half to each.

It's advisable, naturally, to do the painting on a flat area on the lawn, but if this is not possible, you caii work on the porch. Just be sure to place several layers of newspaper beneath the rug before you begin. Tn owning your own home, as in So many things, the old adage that "You've got to start some place" applies. these cracks do not affect the strength of the wall in 'any way. No matter how thick the foundation walls and no matter how solid may be ground, upon which the house is built, such cracks "can occur and there is no way the builder can avoid them, the association points out. Masonry basement walls, like every other part of the house, are lot waterproof in themselves, and are subject to expansion and con- under wide temperature ranges. To reduce the possibility of leakage, the outside of the foundation, underground, is covered with a suitable waterproof coating. This helps keep the house dry.

It is just as impossible for the home builder to avoid the cracking of cement work as it is to avoid cracks in concrete highways, driveways and walks. When frost penetrates the ground it will often raise the concrete to the point of changing the course of surface drainage from downspouts, etc. When warmer weather arrives, the concrete will sometimes return to its original position. i TKe structural -lumber in a new home ihas been -'selected in sizes and grades that provide a large safety above and beyond that necessary to carry the intended load. But shrinkage in all wood is inevitable.

The home's frame has been designed so that shrinkage may be as nearly even as possible, and the house will settle equally. This shrinkage in the framing explains why moldings, trim and quarter- rounds seem to work out of their original positions. Wood shrinkage can cause joints in woodwork to open, doors to warp slightly and hairline cracks to appear in plaster particularly a round door openings, plastered arches and stair wells. Shrinkage, which occurs even in gives a.two-coat "hide" in one application. It passes all important government specifications in its class.
