Bryan Wendtland hit a The Blind Ref READY DRAFT By Andrew Pekarek Press-Gazette Media The Green Bay Notre Dame hockey team had a program-record four players picked Tuesday in the USHL Phase II Draft. Mason Appleton, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior forward, was chosen by the Tri-City Storm with the third overall pick, the highest ever for a Notre Dame player. "I'm very honored to go where I went in the draft," said Appleton, who led the Tritons with 70 points (30 goals, 40 assists) last season when they made their fifth straight WIAA state appearance.

"It's awesome to see four Notre Dame kids go. It just goes to show how good of a program Notre Dame is becoming. This is what we're all working for: to one day play junior hockey and college hockey." The Green Bay Gamblers made 19 picks in the draft, including 12 forwards and six defense-men. USHL teams could select from all eligible birth-year players who were not already protected by a team in Phase II, which went until teams had filled their rosters to 45 players. In addition to Mason Appleton, Notre Dame's Luke Davison, Brett Gruber and Collin Apple-ton were among 10 Wisconsin natives taken in the draft.

Davison, a senior de-fenseman, was chosen in the sixth round by the Fargo Force, which also picked junior forward Collin Appleton, Mason's cousin, in the 10th round. Gruber, a senior forward, was chosen in the seventh round by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Sioux City opted to not protect Gruber's rights after picking him in the 15th round last year. Bloom From Page C1 watch him when he jumps, he's coaching half of the other kids. He likes to see everybody do well.

"I've been doing this for 29 years, and I don't get many kids like that. You could put his picture next to track athlete in the dictionary. He fits perfectly." Bloom manages to keep that positive mentality even when things aren't going his way. His performance at the Pulaski Invite on Thursday was an example of that. Bloom opened the meet by taking a no-height in the high jump when he failed to clear 6 feet, 4 inches on his opening jumps.

It was the first time he ever had taken a no-height. He was then the anchor leg on the 400-meter relay, which was disqualified for making a handoff outside of an exchange zone. "Everybody has those nights," Bloom said. "I've seen professionals no-height before. You can't let things bother you like that.

It's still early in the season and when you do as many events as I do it's like it's over now and just move on to the next meet." Bloom didn't have to wait until the next meet to move on. Later in that meet, he went 19-9 to win the long jump and broke a school record by clearing 13-3 in the pole vault all in less-than-ideal conditions due to drizzling rain that had fallen earlier in the meet, which the Seymour boys won. In between events, Bloom kept his attention on the track and cheered on his teammates. "He's always at the finish line or where they start, jumping up and down and yelling," Sey scattered five hits with six strikeouts to pick up the complete-game win. McKayla Krueger was 2- for-3 for De Pere.

New London 2, Denmark 1 DENMARK Nellie De-prey scored the Vikings' goal off an assist by Taylor McMonagle to tie the game going into the half. Alexis Messina netted the winning goal at the 52-minute mark. mour senior Dylan Beyer said. "He's got so much confidence. Even if we're an underdog, he still feels we're going to win." According to Bloom leads the state with a high jump of 6-10 this season.

His goal is to reach 7-0 and also eclipse the all-time state record of 7-l34, which has stood for 35 years. The coaches at Cincinnati want Bloom to compete in the decathlon, which is a combination of 10 events. "They asked me to try a lot of events," Bloom said. "I've just been staying really busy." Said Schwantes: "Very few kids can bounce from the events that he does. It's physically difficult, and he doesn't let it bother him." Bloom, an all-Bay Conference goalie in soccer as a junior, played soccer and was the kicker on the football team as a senior.

"He loves to compete and is a great competitor," said Seymour senior Sandy Cohen, the defending D2 state champion in the triple jump. "He worries about other people more than his event at certain times." Like last year at the state meet. Bloom won a tiebreaker based on attempts to win the D2 high jump title. But he also kept close tabs on the D3 high jump pit, where PrincetonGreen Lake sophomore Jordan Wesner won. Bloom had been exchanging texts and tips with Wesner during the season.

He was equally excited about seeing Wesner reach the top of the state podium. "I like to help other people a lot," Bloom said. "I've been like that since I was little. My mom was a teacher, so I try to help others as much as I can and stay positive." Fi(0R DA and get-together headquarters!
