Beverly Hills, Feb. 11 (UPI) The late Ernie Kovacs was honored Saturday as the best television director of 1961 at the Directors Guild of America annual awards dinner held here and in New York. The late actor, who also produced and directed TV shows, was given the award for his "Ernie Kovacs Special," described as a study in silence with no dialogue.

Runners-up in the awards were "Doyle Against The House," "The Danny Kaye Show," "The Power and The Glory." which starred Sir Laurence Olivier, and "Victoria Regina." Kovacs' widow, comedienne Edie Adams, was escorted to the rostrum at the Beverly HiILj Hotel by actor Edward G. Robinson and accepted the award for her late husband. "It's difficult to be creative," she said. "Ernie always felt he kind of had it made. He felt he had the tools to be creative and the opportunity." "I think Ernie would like to thank the crew," she said, referring to Kovacs assistants on the show.
