Dr. Ray Ivan Martin, 83, passed away Wednesday, July 2nd, at Wesley Acres in Des Moines, due to Lymphoma of the brain. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 11th, and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.

on Saturday, July 12th, both at First United Methodist Church, 1001 Pleasant Street, Des Moines. Ray was born August 28, 1930, on a farm near Rock Port, Missouri, the youngest of eight children. He attended schools in northwestern Missouri and southwestern Iowa, graduated from Simpson College and received his ThD. from Boston University. While a seminary student at B.U., he met and later marched and was arrested with Dr.

Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama, in the struggle for civil rights. He served churches in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, then returned to Iowa in 1967, serving as Associate Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Des Moines. During his time there he helped establish the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center, where he was the first director. In 1978 Ray went into private practice.

While in private practice Ray served as pastor for Centennial United Methodist and Marquisville United Methodist churches. After his retirement he also served the First Presbyterian churches of Earlham and Dexter, Iowa. Ray and his wife of 59 years, Mary Ann (Wisecup), enjoyed square dancing, camping, bowling, and activities with church groups. Ray sang in the Pride of Iowa Men Barbershop chorus and enjoyed biking, including a coast to coast bike ride in 1993 to raise money for Wesley Woods church camp. Ray was also active with Stroke Club, surviving a stroke in 2003.

He is survived by Mary Ann, his four children; Craig (Myra Norris), Cynthia Martin-Kresse (Robert Kresse), Ivan (Tammy), Clinton (Melissa), and four grandchildren; Andrew and Megan Kresse, and Lucas and Lilyana Martin. He has two living siblings, Jim Martin and Phyllis Craven, and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. In lieu of memorial gifts may be given to the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center, Camp Wesley Woods, or to any of the churches Ray served. RAY MARTIN Des Moines Dorothy Jean (Switzer) Cushing, 91, passed away July 7, 2014 at UnityPoint Methodist West Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m.

Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Van Meter United Methodist Church with interment at Van Meter Cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 9 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel where family will be present from 5:30 7:30 p.m. Dorothy was born September 12, 1922 to Floyd and Garnet (Mullins) Switzer in Des Moines. She graduated from Van Meter High School in 1940.

Dorothy married James B. Cushing on May 25, 1945 and they were together forever 60 years. Dorothy, a retired homemaker, devoted wife and mother, was a patriotic member of the Greatest Generation. During the war years she worked at the Van Meter Post She enjoyed 10 years as an Associate at Von Maur. Dorothy was a member of the Van Meter United Methodist Church and a charter member of Van Meter American Legion Auxiliary.

She was involved with the Bob Feller Homecomings; Van Meter Centennial, Bi-Centennial, and Quasqui-Centennial Celebrations. She served on the Madison and Dallas County Election Boards. Dorothy volunteered 7500 hours to UnityPoint Methodist and Blank Hospitals. Dorothy enjoyed piecing quilts, embroidery, ballroom dancing with James, and trips to Branson, MO before experiencing the devastating effects of Macular Degeneration. Her favorite pass times were listening to biographies and big band music.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband James (2005), and son-in-law Ed (2012). She is survived by daughter Jean Willard of Des Moines and son Jimmy of West Des Moines; granddaughter Christen (Mike) Thalman and great grandsons Jonathan and Aaron Norris; granddaughter Diane (Bob) Kenny and great grandsons Jack, Nicholas, and Luke plus several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorials may be given to the Van Meter United Methodist Church, Spurgeon Manor Dallas Center, IA; UnityPoint at Home Des Moines, or the Iowa Department for the Library Fund. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 11, also at the funeral home. Cremation will occur following the funeral. Private family burial of cremated remains will occur at a later date at Ridgedale Cemetery in Johnston, Iowa.

Lloyd was born August 10, 1973 in Des Moines to Robert and Karen Lorenz. He attended North High School in Des Moines and was employed at McAfee Realty with his sister, a job he truly loved due to his wonderful boss and co-workers. His interests included his family, whom he loved and cared for deeply, Jeep 4X4 off-roading, mud racing, and his Pomeranians. Lloyd was a huge fan of Notre Dame Football and working on cars with his nephews. He devoted much of his time and energy to family members, helping with everything they needed.

Lloyd is survived by his mother, Karen Lorenz; sisters, Teresa (John Knox) and Roberta (Tammy); nephews, John and Jeff Knox; niece, Mady Lorenz (Yency); grandmother, Alice; and uncles and cousins. LLOYD NEAL EUGENE LORENZ Des Moines Neta McCleary (Bowman), age 76, died on July 4, 2014 at Hospice of the Valley in Mesa, AZ. Neta was born on December 25, 1937 in Waggoner, IL.

She graduated from Sterling High School in IL, and from the The University of Iowa in 1959. Neta married Ward McCleary on January 31, 1960. Neta enjoyed a successful and rewarding career in nursing over 46 years, which included service as: Director of Nursing Education and Director of Nursing at Broadlawns Medical Center; Director and Patient Care Coordinator of Hospice in Dubuque, IA and Dover, DE; Patient Relations Coordinator at Iowa Lutheran Hospital; and a nursing seminar consultant and educator. hough she had many health concerns, Neta lived life to the fullest always putting the needs of family and friends She will be greatly missed and remembered most for caring for others. Neta is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ward; daughters, Bethaney Campbell (Curt) and Jennifer Botka (Jason); sister Bonnie Bowman; and grandchildren Selah and Grant Campbell.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Forrest and Margaret Bowman (Blackmore), and sister-in-law Joan Dunning. life will be celebrated on July 18 at the West Des Moines Christian Church, 4501 Mills Civic Pkwy, West Des Moines, IA with visitation at 10:00 am, memorial service at 12:00 pm, and luncheon to follow. NETA MCCLEARY Mesa, AZ Eugene R. Schmitt, 69, was born February 10, 1945, to Wendell and Reva Schmitt in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He passed away unexpectedly at Iowa Lutheran Hospital on Monday July 7, 2014. Eugene served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was an avid sports fan and loved participating in family activities.

He also enjoyed camping, bowling, and most importantly spending time with his grandchildren. Eugene is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sheryl Schmitt; sons, Mike (Penny) Schmitt and Monte Schmitt; sister, Shirley Fulmer; grandchildren, Maddison and Boston Schmitt; and a host of beloved family and friends. Eugene is preceded in death by his parents, and infant brother. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave, with burial to follow at Altoona Cemetery.

SCHMITT Altoona Thomas Eugene Lauterbach, 74, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial Services will be 10:30 AM Friday, July 11 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel. A visitation reception will follow at the Van Meter American Legion Hall in Van Meter.

Tom was an organ donor and cremated per his wishes. Tom was born October 7, 1939 in Waukee, IA the son of Claire and Hazel (Forret) Lauterbach and grew up on the farm north of Van Meter. He graduated from Van Meter High School in 1957 and attended Iowa State University. He married Donna Edwards of Fontanelle, IA on August 31, 1963. Tom and Donna made their home and farmed in Van Meter their entire married life.

He loved farming and raising cattle. He was deeply involved with his kids and their 4-H cattle projects and made many lifelong friends in the cattle industry. He was also a Boy Scout Leader, member of the Van Meter School board, the Lions Club, and the Booneville Co-op Board of Directors. Tom is survived by his wife Donna and children: Lance (Sherry) Lauterbach, Mike (Carri) Lauterbach, and Kris (Joe) Knowles; grandchildren, Cole and Clair Lauterbach and Nic, Lacey, and Nathan Lauterbach. Tom as preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bill.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial scholarship will be established with the Iowa Foundation For Agricultural Advancement to be given annually in name at the Iowa State Fair. Bill was born on April 18th, 1943 at home in Orient, IA. Bill was the only son of children born to Vernon and June Gissible. Bill lived the majority of his life around the Des Moines area.

He spent the last 22 years near Carlisle, IA. Bill served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. Bill spent the last 30 years working for Doors, Inc. A job he truly enjoyed.

His true passion and what he most enjoyed was drag racing his at Eddyville Raceway. Bill was a vehicle enthusiast. He owned several different ones over his lifetime. When Bill racing, he was spending time working on his cars in his garage and with his family. The Twinkle of his eye was his two grandchilden, Miah June and Gannon William Storm.

He was the best Dad and Grandpa we could have had. Bill is survived by his two children, Neal Gissible and Kathy (Jeremy) Storm; two grandchildren, Miah and Gannon Storm; four sisters, Connie(Pete) Lyles, Marlyn(Dana) Rectenbaugh, Beverly(Carroll) Brewer, and Phillys(Harvey) Dillenburg. Along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents, Vernon and Gissible; aunt, Elva Gissible; Uncles, Alan and Floyd Zimmerli; nephew, Darin Merritt and niece Christina Merritt. We will celebrate life at Funeral Home in Indianola, Iowa.

GISSIBLE Carlisle, Iowa Nancy R. Swanson, 48, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Nancy was born August 6, 1966 in Portland, OR. She is survived by her husband, Charles Nielsen; sister, Karen Nelson; and brother, Keith Swanson. There will be no services held at this time.

NANCY RENEE SWANSON Des Moines Corrinne F. Moyer 93 passed away Sun July 6, 2014 at Colonial Manor Home in Col. Jct. IA. She was born April 27th, 1921 to Reuben and Bessie Allen in Columbus Jct, IA.

Corrinne is survived by her son, Thomas Moyer; his wife, Vicki; three grandchildren, Robert, Kristine, Teresa and 9 great grandchildren.
