The Waukee High School Hyper- Stream Club participated in the IT Olympics at Iowa State in four categories: Cyber defense, gaming, multimedia and comm unity service. The club put in many months of preparation and competed in two days of competitions against nearly 40 schools from across the state.

The cyber defense teams placed eighth and 14th out of 29 teams. The gaming team came home with its third consecutive first-place trophy. This was the first year of competing for the multimedia team, which also brought home a first-place trophy. The entire club participated in the annual community service project, the Iowa Service Learning Institute, which won them a second-place trophy. Private BERGMAN ACADEMY Ateam of nine eighth-grade science students on April 15 participated in the sixth annual Diocesan science quiz bowl at St. Francis of Assisi School. The science quiz bowl was open only to eighth-grade students who excel in the areas of life, phys- i cal, earth and space science. uring the bowl, students worked in teams to answer a ariety of multiple choice and open-ended science questions. This year, 14 schools from the Des Moines area and around the state took part in the day, making it the largest competition to date.

Despite this year being Bergman Quiz Bowl debut, the team brought home the gold in their division a nd scored the most points overall. The eighth-grade students spent the afternoon April 25 volunteering in honor of Earth Day a nd the Des Moines Trash Bash. The students selected the Greenwood Park lagoon as their work site. During cleanup, the volunteers collected six bags of trash, as well as several large items including iron posts and rubber tubing. DES MOINES CHRISTIAN Today: The and varsity golf teams will travel to Winterset to compete in the West Central Activities Conference at Lakeview Country Club.

The junior varsity and varsity soccer teams will host Albia on Senior Night on Field 10 at the Cownie Sports Park in South Des oines. On May 10, the Concert Choir and Band will compete in the Iowa High School Music Association Large Group Festival at I ndianola High School. May 12: The West Central Activities Conference Art Fair will be in Panora at Panorama High School. Several junior high and high school students have entries. The golf team will compete in Knoxville at the Pine Knolls Country Club.

The high school track team will compete at Martensdale-St. The track team will ravel to Guthrie Center to ompete at Guthrie Center High School. The varsity and junior varsity soccer teams will comp ete in Pella at Pella Christian High School. May 13: The all-school art show will be on display in the multipurpose room. The junior varsity golf teams will be on-the-road to compete at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Ogden.

The secondary bands and vocal choirs will perform at the Secondary Parade of Bands and Spring Vocal Concert in the school gymnasium at 7 p.m. The varsity golf team will compete in Sectionals at Jester Park Golf Course May 14. May 15: The high school and track teams will compete in districts. The spring ocal music concert of students in grades 4-6 will be held in the school gymnasium. May 16, the PTF-sponsored BMX Stunt Team Show will perform in the gymnasium at he magazine sales award assembly.

MONTESSORI HOUSE The students in the 3-6-year-old classes have just completed an art project where they used primary colors to mix secondary colors and then created a painting. Their paintings are on isplay in the hallway. We are currently studying about symmetry and butterflies. We folded paper and cut out butterfly shapes and also completed a folded paper and paint design to show symmetry. The children also made some simple origami butterflies.

The 5-7-year-old class has spent he past month working on a drum that will be used in their spring music program. They elected fabric pieces and glued them on a large cardboard tube to create a collage. We were able to utilize the fabric scrapes donated by an area quilter. Several students found it was a big job to cover the entire surface, but they were happy with the results. MOUNT OLIVE Mary Gillaspey from the Urban Environmental Partnership discussed with the students what it means to recycle.

The third- and fourth-grade students learned what to recycle and what interesting items can be reused. The timing of this presentation worked well with Earth Day being April 22. The students involved are from Clive, Carlisle, Des Moines, West Des Moines, Grimes, Ankeny, Urbandale, Polk City and Johnston. ST. FRANCIS Fifth-grade science students elebrated Earth Day by cleaning up the grounds of the school and parish.

They raked ulch on the playgrounds, swept sidewalks and collected garbage. In religion, the fifth rade is creating Ten Command- ments books for our first-grade buddies. We will also be starting our unit on Mary. A visit to Hy-Vee Hall, May crowning, a Talking Canvas Downtown walking Park visit and field day will round out the year. Eighth-graders are busy working on their science fair projects as well as studying World War II.

hey completed literature circles on the Holocaust and the war. They will begin their research papers focusing on a topic from that historical period. ST. THERESA Pre-kindergarten went on a field trip to the Earl May lawn and garden center on 22nd treet in West Des Moines. Students were able to view plans drawn by a landscaper, ook at and smell the flowers and ask questions.

We also got popcorn available to customers at the store. Earl May also donated flowers to our classroom. The students dictated what they learned when we returned to school. We are awaiting warmer weather so we can plant our flowers outside. In reading, the third-grade lasses are starting a story by author Chris Van Allsburg.

We will be looking at other books by this author and comparing and contrasting his writing. He is the author of Polar and a Third grade also had their final book talk with the Franklin Library this week. The ibrarian discussed new and interesting books, both fiction and non-fiction. indergarten practiced their Alphafriend sounds, wore special letter shirts, used props starting with their letter sound and sang their letter song to schoolmates, family and friends for the annual Letter arade. Kindergarten is learning about the earth.

We read about mountains and valleys. We sorted pictures of living and non-living things. We made a project using play dough, paint and pipe cleaners. The general music and choir groups recently held concerts. Kindergarten and first-grade Spanish classes finished their books on an adaptation of Eric Bear, Brown Bear What Do You The students learned the colors and animals i Spanish.

Intermediate students are working on clothing vocabulary and learning how to say what they like and like to wear. The seventh-graders are showing their creativity by interpreting and writing poetry. They are discussing various poets. Robert Frost stimulated their discussions with Road Not The poem by Denise Levertov caused confusion but also motivation for the students to discover what she attempted to explain. The eventh-graders will be writing poems of their own.

The fifth-grade classes are studying the American Revolution. Students are comparing types of maps, including learning how to read different battle maps. The sixth-grade social studies class is finishing up their unit on modern China with and will next study India. We will have a guest speaker and the students will be introduced to the culture and lifestyle of India. The seventh-graders are wrapping up their unit on Australia by creating an Australian web.

Students have been busy researching and creating a web using a topic within the areas of either the outback, the Great Barrier Reef, or examining Australian animals. In eighth- grade social studies, the students are beginning their unit on Reconstruction and Abraham assassination. The eighth-graders will be focusing on primary documents to better understand this event. St. Theresa is having a buy one, get one free book fair in the media center.
