A vibrant new down town is taking shape along a brand new one-third mile stretch of road called Rowan Boulevard. Construction began in 2009 and some elements of the plan are complete. The boulevard connects existing university buildings and classrooms along Route 322 with Glassboro 's Main Street.

The downtown will feature a mix of stores, eateries, market-rate apartments, student housing, professional offices, entertainment venues and a town square. The $300 million project is a partnership between Rowan University, private developers and the borough. The concept is to build a walkable downtown designed to provide products and services and generate revenue from the college community and the region at large. The boulevard's first major retailer, the Barnes Noble Collegiate Superstore and Starbuck's cafe, opened in December 2010. Also complete are The Rowan Boulevard Apartments, housing for 884 students in 28 one-bedroom efficiency units and 214 four-bedroom suites.

Visitors to Rowan University and the region now have a hotel close by. Seven months ago, the 129-room Courtyard by Marriott Hotel and Conference Center opened, just a block from the college campus. Adjacent to the Marriott is the Whitney Center providing 22,000 square-feet of retail space, eateries, a bank, as well as housing for 300 more students. A 62-seat Pizza Hut will open this year. The five-story Enterprise Center, also on Rowan Boulevard, opened just six months ago.

It provides academic facilities for the College of Graduate and Continuing Education as well as retail space. A beauty salon and a Domino's Pizza are expected to cut their ribbons this year.
