The five-man group is a subcommittee of the State Advisory Committee on Education, which authorized its creation. JWl UANDYfiMN NEEDS 1933 ffifitffaftW THE COURIER-JOURNAL LOUISVILLE, SUNDAY MORNING, MAY 24, This craze to be your own handy man 'Do It Yourself Is National Mania Why this sudden urge to ba handy men and often handy women? The psychologist has the answer.

It's because, he says, "the pace of the modern world is so swift that the average man is constantly seeking relaxation from tension relaxation which he gets by puttering around in his home workshop." True To A Degree That's a good explanation. And It's probably true to a degree. But why isn't the man of the house relaxing by sitting in a comfortable chair in his slippers? It is estimated that about 53 per cent of all dwelling units in the United States are occupied today by their owners as compared with 40 per cent 10 years ago. More homes more homeowners more repairs. Yet the sales of home-repair materials during the same period have increased much more.

Perhaps the real answer at least, the most important one-is the high cost of labor. It's no longer possible to call in a handy man for a few hours and have him fix half a dozen things around the house for $3 or $4 and a cup of coffee. You have to call in a specialist at so-much-per-look and so-much-per-hour, and often you can't get him when you want him. Every home ued to have an embryonic workshop. Sometimes it was only a hammer with a shaky head and a screw driver The subcommittee composed of three educators, a businessman and a farmer, will submit its draft program to the full committee for approval, rejection, or modification.

The full committee set a deadline of August 10 for completion of its final report incorporating recommendations to be made to the 1954 Legislature. Butler Names Five Men Wendell P. Butler, State superintendent of public instruction find chairman of the advisory committee, named the five-man work group which he heads. Other members are Dr. Lyman dinger, Lexington, president of the Kentucky Education Association; II.

Fred Willkie, Indianapolis businessman, formerly of Louisville; Burl St. Clair, Falls of Rough, president of the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation, and Dr. R. B. Atwood, president cf Kentucky State College here.

Dr. A. Y. Lloyd, executive director of the Legislative Research Commission, and Dr. Robert Mills, on loan to the commission from the State Education Department, are consultants.

The subcommittee directed Widow Seeks Sheriffs Job In Henderson Henderson, June 17 (Pi The widow of a former Henderson County sheriff who resigned after antigambling crusaders attempted to oust him filed today for the Democratic nomination as sheriff. She Is Mrs. Annie Brackett, widow of W. Brackett, who resigned last year after the Henderson Good Government League filed ouster charges against him. Brackett gave ill-health as his reason for resigning.

He died later. Sheriff Lee Williams, who as a Good Government League candidate won a special election to fill out Brackett's term, also has filed for the Democratic nomination. He again has league backing. Others seeking the sheriff's post are Democrats Roy Critser and Sidney Nunnelly and Republican Eugene Wedding. Stevenson Lauds Turkish Troops Ankara, June 17 (P) Adlai E.

Stevenson praised the effectiveness of Turkish troops fighting in Korea on his arrival here today for a five-day visit. The globe-trotting Democratic leader said that during his stay in Korea "I heard stories of the power of Turkish troops." He added, "I am proud we are allies in the Korean endeavor, which, it looks now, may shortly come to an end." Stevenson announced he intended to visit Yugoslavia for five days, where he hopes to talk with President Tito. Stevenson said today that President Eisenhower has asked to see him on his return to the TJnitpd Statps va nrmied today to teal I'Ti I1''' ram i'r n- Lloyd and Mills to prepare a list of policy questions it must pa-, on in developing a draft of the program and set a meeting hen for 9:30 a.m. (CS.T.) next Wednesday. Its proposed program will be based partly on findings of fad and opinion gained in a grass roots survey of education by local committees, on facts supplied by the research commission, other data, and recommendations of various individuals.

The Commission staff's analysis of information obtained from the local committes in their replies to questionnaires circulated this spring were presented to the State advisory group. Commission To dive Report The advisory committee left it up to the Legislature Research Commission, which meets at 2 p.m. (C.S.T.), tomorrow, to make public the information obtained through the survey. The survey was conducted to gather facts on the existing school system and opinions from local committee members as to what they consider adequate. Power tools won't transform a handy man into an expert cabinetmaker, but they can start him in that direction. Trade Revolutionized Perhaps some of the credit for the fix-it-make-it urge should go to power tools. They save work, they save time and are fun to operate.

Yet only in the past few years have the country's largest manufacturers put models within reach of the average income. AIL this has revolutionized the. trade. Salesmen had to develop new techniques, advertisements had to be aimed at the homeowner, special displays and demonstrations had to be created, tools and materials often had to be simplified. Now we've got a hardware week, a paintup week, a fixit week and this year, for the first time on a national scale, there was a do-it yourself show in New York City.

In the middle of all this excitement is the lady of the house, especially if she doesn't have a time-consumer of her own. She is torn between gratitude that her husband is occupied with something that keeps him home and dismay at his long frequent absences in the workshop. A "workshop" widow is far worse than being a golf widow, since it allows the 'little woman little opportunity to complain about the injustice of it all. After all, hubby is staying home, isn't he? And he is doing something for the benefit of the house, isn't he? Quality STEP LADDERS Each Finest quality fir ladder stock. Sturdily built.

Drill Is A Must Today, no self-respecting home handy man would admit that he didn't own a few power tools or at least a portable electric drill. It is estimated 11,000,000 American homes have workshops now with billions of dollars worth of equipment.

Circular saws range from $20 to several hundred dollars. The same goes for handsaws, jigsaws, and other stationary power tools. The portable power tools are somewhat cheaper, but their price range also is very wide. As with hand tools, quality costs extra. It is the portable electric drill which gives a man his first realization of how quickly and easily a power tool can do a tedious and exacting hand job.

A few presses on the trigger, a whir, and a difficult task had been made easy. It takes time to produce a healthy respect for such tools when carelessly used. Like a new automobile driver, who feels all-powerful until he has an accident, it often takes a ruined project or a clipped finger to demonstrate that neither the eye nor mind can wander without disastrous results. The big moment in the transition from a minor leaguer to a major league is the purchase of a stationary power tool. A circular table saw makes remarkably accurate cuts far easier than ever could be done by hand.

DROP SIDINGS SHELVING BOARDS "Here Since 1901" I BROS. af BRECKINRIDGE EW York, May 23 Let's mark this down as the "do- yourself" decade. Maybe you did your own painting around the house in 1942, but for every one of you, nine cf your neighbors were hiring it done. Last year, two out of every three did the job themselves. In 1948 about 28 per cent of homeowners hung their own wallpaper.

Last year it's estimated about 60 per cent were amateur paper hangers. Sales of Tools Soar Sales of home power tools Jumped from $6,000,000 in 1947 to $80,000,000 last year. Lumber yard sales to homeowners totaled $1,200,000,000 in 1939; in 1948. Today the total is estimated at close to a year. Prices are up, of course, but that doesn't, account ior all the zooming increase.

The craze to paint, paper, or swing a hammer is no passing fancy. Companies that formerly served only the professionals are now selling to the amateurs and learning, sometimes with surprise, there are a lot more amateurs thsrn professionals. Circulation of handcraft magazines and books is way up. Newspapers, radio, and TV stations are devoting more attention to "do-it-yourself" features. Office workers in a huddle are more likely to be discussing the proper way to mix concrete than the curves of Debbie Reynolds or Marilyn Monroe.
