with it to Raleigh Monday a week ngo MEMORIAL IMY KXEKClxKS Th bwryanre of Memorial Day Tuesday and Major Address The memorial exercises Tuesday were well attended but perhaps not ro largely as the average The court 1 house was filled a good many people from the country being present There was no music and the absence of tho Blues necessitated the omis sion of the military feature Mr Leinster the chief marshal was master of ceremonies Rev Dr Wood who made the opening prayer touchingly referred to the dead he roes in whose honor we were assem bled and also to the united forces now marshalled in the same camps for the delivery of the oppressed and prayed that the Lord would guide the army and navy for His purposes The address by Major Robbins ivhich followed was interesting broad and patriotic He briefly but lucidly set forth the contention of each side at the beginning of the conflict the irreconcilable differ ences which ended in a resort to arms admitting that each side had grounds for its contention After complimenting the brave men who fought on each side he pointed out that we failed because we were out numbered about three to one not withstanding we were able to pro long the war for four years A brief reference to our present troubles and to ilzhugh Lee brought forth a storm of applause Major Robbins spoke as a Confed erate soldier who had participated in all the great battles of the war describing the pathetic scene at Appomattox at the hour Of tho sur render when strong men wept like little children and surrendered only to superior force and to the decree of God Almighty that the Union should stand The speaker then took two leaders from each side Davis and Lee and Lincoln and and de scribed them paying high tributes to each and closed with a fitting refer ence to one country and one flag and expressed pride in the fact that we are now united and that Anglo Saxon hearts are beating in nnison for the relief of the downtrodden and the overthrow of the oppressor The exercises were closed with the benediction by Rev Dr Rowe after which the ladies of tlie Memorial As sociation the ex Confederates and citizens marched to the cemetery and decorated with flowers the graves of the fallen heroes fen Why lb Band Play The fact that the band refused to play on Memorial Day has of course caused a good deal of talk The members of thrfband say and truly that while they have always furnish ed music gratia on publicoccasions here they hape received little en couragement in return for their kindness tbat'tbey have spent their time and a great deal of money to organize and keep up a good band here but that when they ask aid of the public by giving entertainments the patronage is so small that they rarely more than pay expenses While they are grateful to the few who have aided and encouraged them they feel impelled to refuse to i play on public occasions because they are not accorded proper treat ment by the community as a whole Moreover they say the call for their services on this particular occasion came more in the nature of an order or a demand than a courteous re quest and this help their al ready outraged feelings They ap preciate fully they say the occasion of the gathering Tuesday and while it may not have been best to draw the line at that time they felt that it had to be drawn and that they had just as well begin The Landmark feels perfectly free to express its opinion about the matter and we have to say that 1 while we sympathize fully with the baud and are conscious that they have a just grievance we regret that they drew the line on Memorial Day Their services were asked in honor of the dead not of the living and while we appreciate their view of the case we regret for many rea sons that they play Tuesday and take another day to lay down their ultimatum HandJumest line ever shown on this market And th ii'Bs will do well to seo them before stock is broken We are t' Yving now lino of White Brothers HKAIIEU SCHOOL I OMM K5CE KNT I'ro McIver Able The Graduat ing Cla and lhe Exerrleee Venterday and IHt Evening The annual iclosing exercises of the Statesville graded school began Wednesday night at 8:30 As is usual upon such occasions the large auditorium was full to over flowing many who could not be seat ed standing tip in the aisles and entrance hall The first number on tho programme was tho song Old North led by a class of the pupils the audience joining in the chorus Then tho Superinten dent Prof Thompson in a few well chosen and timely words introduced the speaker of the hour Charles McIver Litt presi dent of the Notmal and Industrial College at Greensboro Dr McIver spoke for a little over an hour upon the theme "Educa tion The Duty of Those Who HaveEducation to Those Who Have The speaker fust directed atten tion to the progress that had been made educational matters in the last decade He visited Statesville just ten years ago and at that time we had no public schools nor were there any in other towns and cities of the State Then a new era dawned town after town awakened to the new order of things and now in the year 1898 only two of the larger towns of the State Oxford and Henderson are yet without public schools The idea held by some that education is simply an ornament something to show off with was shown to be fallacious the maxim "Knowledge is is without foundation but applied knowledge is power The simple acquisition of knowledge is of no benefit Knowledge acquired and thenapplied is everything Education in the opinion of the speaker is an indi vidual necessity The prosperity the advancement and the well being of the State depends upon the educa tion of her people The only certain method we nave that can and will ac complish this end is the public school system Dr McIver took up and answered the usual excuses offered against an increase of the school fund These reasons are held by a gradually decreasing minority which it is hoped for the good of the State will goon be too small and weak to further retard the forward progress of our good old State The speaker said the reasons held by those opposed to more and better schools and the consequent slight in crease in the school tax were: A is opposed to the tax because he does want to educate other children thinks we are so poor we cannot says the present schools are so no account we should abolish them has argument which is contained in the one word "Nig These were well in a few words which could not and assuredly did not fail to carry conviction with them The address was an appeal to the better thought of the audience an endeavor to arouse their patriotism and zeal in the cause of the State and consequently their own cause The prosperity of the State depends upon the people and that of the peo ple upon the State An ignorant people cannot advance nor does prosperity and ignorance go hand in hand It the schools are of no ac count and too few at present make them better and increase the num ber The audience followed the speaker attentively and profitably Space and lack of proper facilities prevents the publication of the ad dress in its entirety Those who could not be present at its delivery were deprived of a literary treat the like of which has not febcen lizard hre in many a day Thursday morning a pleasing programme reeitationsApueches and addresses it was out of sight We were doing tho double quick aet when one of the feet got tangled after which it was a game of pile on which is as pleasant in ranks as striking an open door edgeways at midnight One of the greatest troubles which we have to contend with is the changing of positions by the men during the evolutions My pivot man changed positions about as often as the chairman of the North Carolina railway commission and finally changed fours Marshal Allison will no doubt be much gratified to hear that his old friend Mr Patton of Ashe ville has been made adjutant of the first battalion in our regiment I find that each company claims to have the best officers in the regiment I dreamed last night that Capt lanigan and Mr Webb had gone to heaven in an air ship but found when I got
