And hockey hasn't been too bad for NBC, either.

Wednesday night's Wings-Blackhawks overtime thriller was the most-watched NHL broadcast ever on NBCSN, drawing a 2.07 national rating and 3,354,000 viewers. Its previous record in seven-plus years was a 1.97 rating on June 2, 2010, when Chicago played Philadelphia in the Stanley Cup finals. "We live by numbers every day and what this tells us is that the NHL is on a roll in this country," NBC Sports president of programing Jon Rutgers is in negotiations to bring in Gordon Gee." Quick hits Justin Verlander, asked on the MLB Network how he'd pitch to Miguel Cabrera: "I guess I'd maybe start him with a fastball. I mean, I've seen him hit everything, so it's just basically kind of flip a coin and hope he's not looking for it. He can hit a fastball at his neck and he can hit a slider down and away, both for homers oppo, it doesn't matter.

Just throw it and pray." Miggy, by the way, came in seventh in a cougarlife.com survey ranking baseball's hottest cubs. (FYI, cougars and cubs are older women and younger men, which is why Jim Leyland isn't on the list). The Rangers' Yu Darvish, quoted in the Dallas Morning News on team CEO Nolan Ryan comparing him to Verlander: "I've only won something like 20 games. I don't think I'm at a point where I can be compared to him. I'm not even at the starting point." Will Brinson, on the Lions' over under of 7.5 wins this season: "Even though 2013 should be better than 2012 for Lions fans, I just can't look at their schedule and see eight wins right now.

Verdict: UNDER." Compiled from staff reports and news services by STEVE SCHRADER, who can be reached at 313-222-6710 or sschraderfreepress. com. THE TICKER Miller told the Associated Press. "While the lockout was unfortunate, we're seeing that hockey has some impressive momentum." Oh, yeah, the lockout. Guess hockey fans don't hold a grudge after all.

SUNDAY'S TV HIGHLIGHTS 7:30 a.m. SPEED U-M condemns Beckmann for 'offensive' column since 1981. The Board of Regents never formally or informally met to discuss Beckmann's column, but it did discuss it in e-mails and conversations other, a person Frank Beckmann among each ty. His comments were offensive and inaccurate. At the University of Michigan we strive at all times, in all ways, to create a campus that is open and inclusive and free from insidious racial stereotypes.

This is a core value." Beckmann was unable to be reached for comment. However, he said in his apology that he decided to apologize after talking to "some good friends." Beckmann's column ran in the Detroit News last Friday and drew fire from some people who found it racially insensitive. In it, Beckmann wrote, among other things: "To the politically correct, the mention of fried chicken is an immediate endorsement of slavery rather than a testament to the innovative determination of the American slave population to improve its own physical well being by creating a readily available dish which improved their diet. "Making fried chicken and popularizing it could thus be viewed as an accomplishment that should serve as a testa ment to the determination of a group of people who found an inventive way to subsist while enduring unimaginable and deplorable living conditions. "But that would remove the opportunity of the political elite to capitalize by creating an atmosphere of victimization." On Wednesday, Beckmann backtracked.

"In my effort to emphasize my disdain for political correctness, I conflated it with the Sergio GarciaTiger Woods situation and that was a mistake on my part. I failed to properly consider the sensitivity of racial comments which stereotype people and the pain that causes." Beckmann was a sportscast-er when he was originally hired to do the radio broadcast as the play-by-play man. Since 2004, Beckmann has hosted a daily talk show on WJR-AM (760) that often focuses on political issues. Contact David Jesse: 313-222-8851 or djessefreepress. com By David Jesse Detroit Free Press Education Writer The University of Michigan on Thursday condemned an "offensive" newspaper column by U-M football announcer Frank Beckmann, but it has taken no disciplinary action against him, despite concern from some members of the U-M Board of Regents over Beckmann's views.

Beckmann issued an apology Wednesday for the column, which used golfer Sergio Gar-cia's comments about fried chicken and fellow golfer Tiger Woods to attack political correctness. Garcia's comments and Beckmann's column drew strong reactions from people claiming they had racist overtones. The apology came after members of the Board of Regents expressed concern over the column, a person with knowledge of the conversations told the Free Press. Beckmann is employed by IMG College, which holds the radio rights to broadcast U-M football games. However, the university retains control over who is on the air.

Beckmann has been handling the radio duties with knowledge of the discussions told the Free Press. Both the regents and athletic director Dave Brandon passed those concerns on to Beckmann. University spokesman Rick Fitzgerald said he had no knowledge of any conversation among the regents or Brandon and Beckmann on the topic. Athletic department spokesman Dave Ablauf said the department was "a partner in the statement that was issued by the university and fully supports that position." He declined to talk about any details on any conversations between Brandon and Beckmann.
