She attended Detroit public schools and worked at Detroit National Bank as an elevator operator. She also sold Avon cosmetics door to door. While in Detroit she was a member of the Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. She volunteered cleaning the church and sewing for the Women's Cancer Society. Gerry had many hobbies besides her grandchildren. She was a member of the VFW and Moon Dusters Club in Detroit. She loved singing and Irish traditions and accepted everyone she met. Survivors include her children; Ronald Joseph Mertz of Herrin, IL, Susan Elizabeth Henderson of Herrin, IL, and Brian Patrick Mertz of Detroit, Ml, four grandchildren; Chrissy, Amy, Michael and Jennifer Rose, and seven great grandchildren, Anthony, Audrey, Destiny, Abigail, Alyssa, David and Kateland. She had been married to Ed "Eddie" Evers for 63 years preceding his death in January, 2012. Marge was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and served on the Funeral Dinner committee for 11 years. She is famous for her deviled eggs, and claimed to have made over 10,000 of them during her tenure. She was involved in many volunteerism efforts, and was a proud member of the Crashaw Literary Society, and worked at JC Penney's for 14 years. Maggie rode on the back of Eddie's Gold Wing motorcycle "to prove her love" for him; she was known for wearing curlers under her helmet. She was an avid reader, loved her crossword puzzles, and enjoyed her creative writing classes at Ball State University. She felt honored to be the "adopted grandmother" of the neighborhood children. Every stranger quickly be came a friend, and friends became family. But above all, she loved her children and grandchildren.
