Feature Story 'Max Ruby' hop to small screen as cartoons By JACQUELINE CUTLER ZAP2IT There's a certain glint found only in the eyes of little brothers. It's a look intended to drive older siblings crazy, and most little brothers perfect it long before they start school. Max, the cute, chubby bunny of "Max Ruby" has perfected this look.

This is no mean feat considering Max is a cartoon character, based on the terrific book series by author Rosemary Wells. The characters have been expertly animated for Nickelodeon. Monday, there is a special prime-time presentation. The next morning, the show begins airing in its regular Nick Jr. time slot.

For those who have not read Wells' books, the premise is simple. However, knowing the books is not a prerequisite for watching the show. Ruby is 7, and quite maternal toward her younger brother. There are no parents, and strangely after all, this is about bunnies no other siblings. It begs the question of how they pay the mortgage, but preschoolers 'generally are unconcerned about such matters.

What they do care about is what this cartoon so sweetly depicts. They care about making sense of the world around them, and that no one puts anything they consider yucky on their plates. The program opens with an animated short about hide and seek. Like any preschool boy, Max can't be seen if he is in a closet with a bucket on his head. The next cartoon has Ruby being far more patient than many adults would be in the same situation.

She fixes Max an egg for breakfast, and all he says for most of the cartoon is "bad egg." Ruby never yells. She never lays any guilt on him about starving bunnies in other countries. She reasons with him, though Ruby knows Max is not always logical. The last cartoon in the first show, which is all that was available for review, is the one to which most parents will relate. call and tell her a secret. She tries occupying Max with various quiet toys, all to no avail. He even.hangs up on her friend, and while''doing so, flashes' that little brother glint..
