Stole Editions 3 THE TIMES, SI DAY, MAY 26, 1971 Green not sure his 3-stroke Memphis lead is enough Associated Press MEMPHIS Hubert Green won't be playing it close to the vest in today's final round of the $175,000 Memphis Golf Classic. "Three strokes isn't enough," he said after establishing that much-needed margin with a two-under-par 70 in yesterday's from time to time and try to get a lot in front." Green, already the winner of some $103,000 this season, put together a 54-hole total of 202, 14 under par on the Colonial Country Club Course and within one stroke of the best three-round total of the year on the pro tour. Lou Graham and Bob Wynn came on to tie for second at 205. Graham, a native Tennesseean and a great favorite with the huge gallery, fashioned a five-under-par 67, while the longshot Wynn a non-winner in five years on the tour had a 69. Masters champion Gary Player shot himself back into contention with a 69 and a 206 total, just four strokes behind going into the last round of the chase for a $35,000 first prize.

He was tied with tour regular Don Bies, who had the day's best round, a 66. Rod Curl, the little Wintu Indian who scored a surprise triumph last week in Fort Worth, and Tom Watson drifted back. They were tied for second, two shots back of Green, when play started in mild, cloudy weather, but Watson went to a 74-208 and Curl a 75 for 209. Defending champion Dave Hill had a 70-210. Green, who took the lead in Friday's second round, never trailed and was never caught.

He parred the first six holes he played, birdied the par-five seventh, then parred around to the 16th, another par five. He was hole high in two, hit a beautiful little chip to within two feet of the flag and made the putt. That gave him a four-shot lead, and, with another par five coming up, it looked as it he was preparing to run off and hide from the rest of the field. But he bogeyed the tough 17th, three-putting from a long distance, and had to settle for a par five on the finishing hole after driving into the rough. third round.

"Three strokes is one better than I was starting the round," Green noted. "But it isn't much. If I make a bogey and somebody else makes a birdie, then all of a sudden it's pretty tight. Apparently each of eight OVC schools will be affected, and OVC commissioner Art Guepe said yesterday that one "groujj appeal" will be filed to the NCAA from the conference. "As soon as we find out how many athletes are affected, then we will make an appeal on behalf of everyone who is involved," said Guepe.
