Billie Jean King and her old friend, Rosie Casals, came to the aid of each other amid questionable line calls in the $50,000 Washington Women's Tourna- Associated Press Dave Wottle barely won and Herb Washington didn't win at the Knights of Columbus Indoor Track Meet in Cleveland last night. Wottle, a gold medalist in the 1972 Olympics, captured the mile in 4:03.9, beating Villanova shophomore Eamonn Coghlan by a half step. Coghlan's time was 4:04. Juris Luzins led until the last lap when Coghlan, a native of Ireland, overtook him with Wottle close behind. Then Wottle, wearing his traditional golf cap, turned on the steam on the final turn and outran Coghlan to the tape for his third consecutive mile title in the Cleveland meet.

Earlier, Washington the world indoor record-holder in the 50 pulled up in his speciality and didn't finish, complaining that starter Charles Martin failed to give him enough time to get set. It was the speedster's first 1974 defeat after six victories. 3 WaM 'Linda Nelson rules gymnast ics Linda Nelson of Moore High School won first places in the balance beam, horizontal bar, free exercise, vaulting and the all-round competition yesterday at the Jefferson County Activities Committee gymnastics meet. Team finish: Moore 94.50, Southern 84.55, Doss 78.40, Jeffersontown 67.90, Seneca 43.65. Individuals: Darlene Barker, Southern, tumbling; Brenda Young, Doss, trampoline.

"One of the reasons I haven't run in Cleveland in three years is because of that starter," Washington said. "I spoke to him before the race and told him to make sure I was set before he shot the gun. I hate to lose on a humbug. When somebody beats me, it's fine." Marty Liquori had his problems, too, winding up well behind Byron Dyce (2:09.6) and Lowell Paul (2:09.7) in the 1,000 with a 2:13.8 clocking. "I just couldn't run these turns it's an impossible track to run on," Liquori said.

"Byron did the right thing. He took the lead at the beginning and held it. I couldn't get around anybody on the turns." John Hartnett, a 23-year-old Irishman, set a meet record of 8:33.5 in the two-mile, shaving more than six seconds off the mark set in 1971 by Sid Sink, who was runner-up this time in 8:57. ALBUQUERQUE World record-holder Rick Wohlhuter soundly defeated Marcello Fiasconaro in the 880 at the Albuquerque (N.M.) Invitational and then scoffed at reports of a feud between the two. Wohlhuter, who was timed in 1:49.4 to the Italian's 1:51.7, reportedly had been burning to avenge a recent loss to the free-wheeling Fiasconaro in the 600 at the Los Angeles Invitational.

However, Wohlhuter said, "I like to race Marcello and beat him, and I'm sure Marcello enjoys beating me. Winning is what I wanted but it's not everything." Meanwhile, Fiasconaro said he didn't enjoy running the half-mile and would return home soon. He also indicated he's disenchanted with indoor track.
