THE COURIER-JOURNAL TIMES, SUNDAY, MARCH 19, 1972 Riva Ridge may up status Wednesday Royal Owl tops first ratings for 98th Derby By BOB ADAIR vuunvrMvurnat limn wrllir BILL SHOEMAKER Rider has trouble 4 4i holding Royal Owl pr i tWUm mi ii mm mill Owl defeated both MacArthur Park and Hold Your Peace last year. Where's Riva Ridge? Still in the barn and rated No. 4 until he proves he's as good as the experts said he was in winning the 1971 juvenile championship and winterbook favoritism for the Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes, the events comprising racing's Triple Crown. Of course, the "ridge runner" might do something about that Wednesday when he makes his 3-year-old debut in the Hibiscus Stakes. On the other hand, six furlongs is hardly a test of distance ability and the opposition Isn't likely to Include many other Derby candidates in our Top 10, which is rounded out by New Prospect, Solar Salute, Indian, Tarboosh, Spanish Riddle and Gentle Smoke.

Sure, Riva Ridge won the Garden State Stakes in his final start as a 2-year- odd that although jockey Eddie Maple's foul claim against Hold Your Peace and Carlos Marquez for alleged interference with Tarboosh in the Flamingo was not allowed, the Hialeah stewards saw fit to suspend Marquez. They said he was guilty of "herding" blocking the path of Tarboosh without actually impeding the Calumet colt, which amounts to intimidation. The announcement was not made until the following day, with the stewards explaining that Marquez had been warned previously about similar tactics in another race. A six-man jury in Dade County Circuit Court of Miami has awarded jockey Manuel Ycaza a $225,000 judgment against Hialeah Park as the result of injuries he suffered in a spill on the grass course there two years ago. He had asked $2.5 million, claiming that a bare spot on the turf caused the accident.

1 as the able-' oodied survivors among the record 258 candidates begin the spring phase of preparations for the May 6 classic at Churchill Downs is Royal Owl. You know, Ihe one that passed up yesterday's San Felipe Stakes along with his top West Poast rival, MacArthur Park. Hold Your Peace, the impressive 10-Jength winner of the prestigious Flamingo takes at Hialeah on March 11, is regarded as the main contender and Mac-Arthur Park is No. 3. Yet, it's difficult say at this stage of the campaign what separates the top trio, except that Royal 4 old, but even a mile and a sixteenth is a far cry from the Derby's mile and a quarter.

There's also the nagging failure of the rivals Riva Ridge beat, in the Garden State to do much this winter, which makes one wonder if he really beat anything. Freetex, second in that race, was "no- Courier-Journal Times Derby Ratings Hold Your Peace's dam, Blue Moon, who was 20 years old when he was foaled at Elmendorf Farm in 1969, died at that Lexington breeding establishment during Flamingo Week. Nam Brtcdar I Slat Sir Owntr Trainer where" in the Flamingo and Key to the Mint, who ran third, finished dead last in an allowance race Wednesday, although he was injured and sidelined indefinitely. Another factor to consider is that Lucien Laurin, who trains Riva Ridge and ranks as his main booster has proved to be a poor prophet. He said Spanish Riddle, second to Derby non-contender Upper Case in the Florida Derby, would turn the tables on his stablemate in the Flamingo.

Then Spanish Riddle wilted from an early battle with Tarboosh and Hold Your Peace, winding up sixth. Blinkers make difference While some question Royal Owl's distance capabilities because his sire, Crazy Kid, was a record-breaking sprinter, trainer John Canty and other veteran horsemen point out that he should inherit staying ability from his dam, Mama Mouse. And the world's winningest jockey, Bill Shoemaker, who rides Royal Owl, confirms that "this colt wants to go on." The Shoe noted that the California-bred stakes star nearly pulled him out of the saddle during a workout in which he donned blinkers for the first time last week. "He's a real tiger," the champion rider commented. Of course, blinkers had virtually the same effect on Riva Ridge when jockey Ron Turcotte worked him at Hialeah, but, as pointed out before, he hasn't yet showed that his sophomore form in competition will match that of his freshman year.

Hold Your Peace demonstrated in the Flamingo, though, that he has improved tremendously since last season and that he can handle a distance at least a mile and an eighth. So that brings up New Prospect, who nipped Hold Your Peace by a head in the seven-furlong Bahamas, when both colts broke the Hialeah track record. Is the son of Never Bend really a head better then Hold Your Peace, or will he falter when he tries to go a route? When you're talking about the Derby, you're talking about horses. And when you're talking about horses, you're talking about uncertainties. Remember Canonero II? Many observers, including Calumet trainer Reggie Cornell, thought it a bit.

The latter's stablemate, Fame and Power, was a neck behind after setting fhe pace while Instinctive, invading from Florida, ran fourth. Calumet Farm trainer Reggie Cornell decided against shipping Tarboosh to fJew Orleans and he probably was wise.

Cornell said the Calumet 3-year-old, third ip the Flamingo at Hialeah, would start only if it didn't rain. And rain it did in torrents. High winds and hail pelted the Fair Grounds in mid-afternoon, delaying activities a half-hour and turning a fast track to slop. Thus No Le Hace's time of 1:52 45 was not sensational, although his performance was.
