THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR - WWW.INDYSTAR.COM Arts&Entertainment isi SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2002 17 Heartland winner returns MOVIE PICKS f-T-1 o End All Wars," the ' I ' $50,000 grand prize I winner at the Heart-land Film Festival in October, returned Friday to Indianapolis for a run at Kerasotes Showplace 12 and Showplace 16. Don't wait for the last day to see it, as some people did during the festival. The final screening, like many, was a sellout, and not everyone who wanted to was able to see the World War II film set in a prisoner-of-war camp overseen by the Japanese. Festival attendance at "To End All Wars" totaled 1,439. The inspiring film, in which the human spirit perseveres in the most adverse conditions, stars Robert Carlyle, Kiefer Sutherland and Ciaran McMenamin. McMenamin plays Ernest Gordon, a young Scottish student teacher who enlists in the Argyll and Sutherland Highland regiment. The regiment is captured and forced to build a railroad through the jungle. Survival often depends on acts of self-sacrifice and heroism. Director David L. Cunningham called The Star recently from a test market showing in Little Rock, Ark., and said that Gordon, who wrote "Through the Valley of the Kwai," the 1962 book on which the film is based, was able to see "To End All Wars" before he died. "He was an amazing man," said Cunningham, who was con tacted by Jack Hafer, the producer (who accepted the award at the festival), about making the film. Cunningham was preparing to film a documentary, and was on a ship to St. Helena, the island off the coast of west Africa to which Napoleon was banished, when he read the book and an early draft of the script, and said "the concept of reconciliation being set in this backdrop of war just really blew me away." He told Hafer that the film would have to be made independently because it couldn't be made in the studio system. They shot it in Cunningham's home state of Hawaii and in Scotland and Thailand. "The process was a difficult one," he said. Nutritionists were involved because actors had to lose weight to look the part of malnourished prisoners. Actors stayed in tents in the jungle. You have these heads of studios coining out, wiping their eyes, from crying in the movie, and then they say, 'We don't know how to market this.' It's been really frustrating. The crowds have been responding so well. But the marketing executives are used to trying to have the sure hit, the : sure thing, instead of dealing with issues of the soul . . . it's how big are the explosions, how big are the stars?" The momentum is starting to build, he said, and "To End All Wars" will open in Los Angeles the first weekend in December. Cunningham said he was surprised when the film won the grand prize at Heartland. "We've done about 11 festivals. For the first half, I would go to all of them. Then I got another movie," so Hafer came instead. "Festivals are a funky monkey. You just don't know what to expect. You're never really sure of all the nuances. I was totally excited and thrilled." THE SNOWMAN 3D Reviewed by Bonnie Britton Reformatted into IMAX 3D, "Santa vs. The Snowman," playing on the big screen at the IMAX Theater at the Indiana State Museum, is a genial, short, family holiday movie about a lonely snowman who goes to war with Santa because he hungers for attention. The animated film refers to "Star Wars" movies, topical subjects and features some nice use of 3D that draws the viewer into the picture. The violence consists of melting the snowman clones (no bloodletting). Voice casting is first rate, with Ben Stein as Spunky the Elf, conducting a factory tour that looks like one of the rides at Epcot at Walt Disney World.
