Nickel, delivering the sermon at mass memorial services the nine girls killed on their senior trip to New Orleans, described death as the consummation of life, "the highest adventure of all." The seven girls who survived in the senior class sat in the front row and touched their eyes with white handkerchiefs as school board President Robert read the memorial roll of the classmates who didn't return. The nine victims were among 19 persons killed Thursday when a Delta Airlines jet crashed behind a motel in a New Orleans suburb. The Rev. Mr. Nickel, of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, told how the class had saved four years for the trip and said, "for a small town like Juda this was the first adventure for many of any significance away from home little did we realize what a tremendous adventure it would be." The overflow crowd of mourners was estimated at 1,500, five times the population of this farming hamlet in the Southern Wisconsin hills just north of the Illinois state line.
