Many RELIGION 1 TODAY American Churches THE Magazines COURIER Publish -JOURNAL, Found LOUISVILLE, Dead Handsome National By GEORGE W. CORNELL Associated Press Religion Writer American religious bodies are going into the magazine field in a big and craftsmanlike way. One after another, they've developed handsome, nationally circulated periodicals, aimed both at reinforcing the faith and capturing mass audiences. "We're competing for people's time and attention right along with radio, television, popular magazines," said Henry McCorkle, editor of the most recently launched church monthly, The Episcopalian. "We can't do it with self-glorifying house organs." Started in New York this spring on authorization of the last Episcopal General Assembly, the new publication and various other church magazines of recent origin have the looks and ingenuity of top commercial "slicks." Subject Matter of Wide Range Pages are glossy and awash with color, the typography eye-catching, the writing brisk and pungent, the contents highly varied, sprinkled with big-name writers.

There's a religious focus, but at the same time, a wide range of subject matter. The trend has sent combined church-magazine circulation soaring to many millions. The bright and stylish new Methodist monthly, Together, started in 1956, already has passed the million mark, and is aiming for two million by the end of its second four years. Editor Leland D. Case, of Chicago, said it's necessary to attract the multitudes in readership if the church is best served.

The objective, he said, is to be both "instructive and entertaining." Circulation Totals 25,000,000 Roman Catholic publications, including 130 newspapers and 451 magazines in this country, now have a total circulation of double that of 30 years ago. Biggest of them the million Catholic Digest, a pocket sized monthly packed with a lively variety in content, and put out in St. Paul, by Father Paul Bussard, publisher, and Father Kenneth Ryan, editor. Also in the million-circulation class is the enterprising Presbyterian Life, official biweekly of the United Presbyterian Church, edited by Robert J. Cadigan Philadelphia.

Recently the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church, moving toward merger, combined their separate magazines into a spirited new biweekly, United Church It's edited by Andrew Vance McCracken, of New York, and Theodore C. Braun, of St. Louis. Louisville-Area Deaths And Funerals HARRY G. KENDALL OBIE HUFF MRS.

They were convicted April 30, 1959, on a charge of maliciously and willfully burning their home at 8474 Dixie Highway to collect $8,000 insurance. They asked the Court of Appeals to overrule the lower court on numerous counts, but appellate court said it could find nothing to justify such action.
