yes- torday. A horse pulling a dray started from the clock corner down- Main street with the bit between his teeth, and tho way he flew was a caution to sky rockets. The driver held on to the reins like- grim death, and although tho street was full of cars and vehicles of all kinds, and women and children were thicker than berries on the crossings, he steered that horse clear of everything, and finally brought him to in the neighborhood of Eighth South street. When the Department arrived at tho plaoe of the supposed flre, the animals were completely exhausted, the up-hill pull being too much for even such stalwarts as tho Department boasts of. No one in tha vicinity could explain bow or by whom the alarm was turned in, and Chief Stanton, after tacklntc up notice offering a reward of $10 for the name of the offender, returned to town, maddest luan in it.

Ho, in company with John Downey of Butte City, Thomas Hlokey and James Harriugton of Park City.Sbad been enjoying himself for nearly in-the healing and invigorating waters, proceeded to leave the tank together.

O'Brien's three friends went to their dressing rooms, leaving him sitting on the stairs washing.hls limbs. Three or four minutes elapsed and one of them called for O'Brien to hurry up. Receiving ho started In search of him, and as ho was not to be found alarm was given. A bather, C. M.

Bodoll. investigated the bottom of the tank and soon fouud O'Brien's body lying face downward on the coment floor. Bo was taken Into the waiting room, where every effort was made by tho management to resuscitate him; physicians were summoned and a ctomach pump brought into use, but the spark of life remaining in him when taken out of the water was too feeble, and in a short time it became apparent that all efforts to bring him to life would prove futile. O'Brien was a well known miner, having worked. In every prominent mining camp on tho Pacific Coast during tho past thirty years, and of lato has been working in Frisco, Binghum, and other mluing camps in this Territory, lie arrived at tho White Houso from Bingham about one week ago.

It is believed that O'Brien was seized with fit or a sudden attack of vertigo while sitting ou tho stairway and fell into tho water. His face, which was slightly abraded und bruised, gives credence to tho theory, aa they give every indication of having been produced by coming in contact with tho rough surface of tho cement iloor. A NSW BACE-TBACK. Kite-Shaped One to Be Piit in Near Eldorado. Tbo movement for now race track is taking form to such an extent that the enterprise is about as well as assured. The Bast farm is most excellently adapted for a tine driving park. Its location near Eldorado is such that it can bo made easily accessible by the extension of a branch from tho Unloo Pacific, a length of one and three- quarter while an extension of the Rapid Transit one mile will take that road to tho proposed track.

Then tho drive from the city out there can be made a delightful one for those who want to go in private conveyances. This enterprise of a ruce track out there has been talked up quietly for some time, and now A. G. Bast has twelve teams ready to put to making tho truck just as soon us be gets the plans for it. And right hero is an interesting feature which has had much to do in the location and plans or this track.

At Independence, Iowa, C. W. Williams built a track having a great big circle connected by two straight lines coming together and then crossing and swinging around iu a small circle unlthitf. This is known as tho kite-shape, with tho judges' stand in the point near the crossing, and the independence track is said to bo t.ho best and fastest in the United States. That track and the frequent races there have mudu tho town known far and neur.

To pattern utter this and make all the Improvements Intended will require 550,000. This money will most likely be raised through incorporating and issuing stock certificates, but the track will bo well under way before this is done. A. G. Bast has a largo number of tine horses, and being engaged in breeding lino animals, is probably tho best man to bo at tho head of this enterprise, but he will be aided by quite a number of other gentlemen who are taking an Interest in forwarding the movement.

The Union Pacific people iiavo already promised to help in the way of transportation direct to the grounds, and other roads will no doubt do their share. NOTES. Owing to tho tough weather tho Denver races havo been postponed uutil to-day, and tho entries for the Salt Lake and Ogden races have boon extended until the midnight of Juno Bth, A telegram from tho Denver Association states that no Colorado horses aro entered for tho Utah races. Tho basement has two very large rooms being fitted up for pupils to exorcise in, and these aro so arranged as to throw into ono when desired. Then there is tho library with over 1000 volumes of well-selected books, a cabinet, apparatus, in fact about everything that is desirable in snob an institution. The older portion of the academy buildings aro in themselves complete, but were getting too small for the increasing numbers of pupils, The largo grove in the roar, fitted up with rustic seats, bowers, latticed houses, is a most delightful place for outdoor exorcise and recreation. But the entire institution seems as nearly perfect as it can be.

To-night there will bo a prize concert in Academy Hall, which will be a very interesting 1 oveut, and give Uie hearers something of an idea of the excellent teachings and discipline tho pupils receive here. Tho pro- gramme is quite varied and well selected. Tho reporter was yesterday shown the prizes, and they arc real beauties. Tho first prize is a china tete-a-tete set, haud- jiainted. The second is a 'toilet set in embroidered sillc, and the third is a mirror sot in painted moleskin.
