Right now, the big item "on the fire" is the Twenty-third Annual Convention of the League of Kentucky Sportsmen, in session at Ashland. With nil the tradition of the steel, oil, gas and coal industries of this historic city as a background, the Northeastern Kentucky Fish and Game Association is playing host to the visit-tng hunters, fishermen and conservationists from all parts of the Commonwealth.

Hardworking J. M. "Click" Smith, retiring third-term president from Franklin, has gathered a huge number of delegates to get down to the business of solving some of the problems which are yet to be tackled today and tomorrow. One of the most important matters on the agenda is the matter of enlisting the support of the League In assisting the l', S. Fish and Wildlife Service in its replacement program for the refuge lands to be flooded by the new Barkley Dam.

The impoundment will rover much acreage of waterfowl, big game and wild turkey lands within the Kentucky Woodlands National Wildlife Refuge. Specifically, to offset this acreage, three replacements are planned. First, the Service asks for all privately-owned lands within rieasant Valley, a narrow unbroken tract of 3.750 acres, presently surrounded by the Refuge. Diemer, of Jeffersontown, has recently scored two major victories, of three championship points each, under the skillful handling of Dick Salter, of Covington. The victories were at Lima, Ohio, and Cincinnati the latter judged by the noted Alva Rosenberg. Samson has 14 of the 15 points required for his title and Tri-State waterfowl will be moved to tlie blocks total 250 acres and are needed to solidify the holdings to make a more manageable unit for upland and big game. Third, to further replace some of the upland game values which will be lost, it has been proposed that certain lands be acquired at the north end of the refuge. Most of the land exists in two large tracts on the south side of the Brandon Chapel Road.

There are other isolated tracts, however, that will be the shore of Barkley Lake. Total acreage is 3.300 acres, all of which Is within Lyon County, Here aeain. the need is to con form some sort of control on its depredations. It has never advocated massacre or wanton destruction of the bird. Another of its primary purposes is to gather the nation's crow shooters into one spot annually and through the exchange of ideas and knowledge, to advance the skill and Science of calling and luring these birds into range in order to make the sport more popular.

Macon Visits solidate holdings to make a manageable unit ahd to pro-icctiuhat the Service presently possesses. has specifically directed the replacement of wildlife lands lost through the construction of the Reservoir. This minimum land requirement plan has bern jointly agreed upon by the Fish and Wildlife Service and (he Corps of L'ngi-tieers. It should carry the endorsement of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Opposition to the plan comes from Trigg and Lyon County land speculators, county officials who may fear decline of their tax structure as a result of more Federally-owned land, and local landowners who actually do not want to move or who may be after a higher price for their land.

In any event, the allocation of funds, through budgetary action by Congressional Committees, is necessary to realize this program and to make the famous refuge produce rather than deteriorate. Constructive and positive action by the convention-mg sportsmen might easily tip the balance in favor of these game-management programs. Crow Hunting Championship Billed Black feathers will fly when the 20th Annual National Crow Shoot and the National Crow Calling Contest convenes next weekend, June 20, 21 and 22 at Frankfort. While all shooters in the United States are eligible to participate, most of the entrants no doubt will come from the states of Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Indiana and West Virginia. Among these entrants will be several former champions eager to cither retain the crown or to regain it.

The sponsor of the shoot, the American Crow Hunters Association, has as its original purpose an attempt to create a consciousness among sportsmen for crow shooting and to siun i aucu Others wouldn't attend college if they didn't have the chance to pursue athletic careers. The field is more than twice the size of last year's when only 34 turned out to battle for three places at Crescent Hill. Gordon benney won last year's qualify-in? medal in a playoff with Andy Monroe after bolh had finished with 140. Eddie Schnurr was last year's other qualifier with 141 and he went to the quarter-finals of the National meet. Neither Denney nor Schnurr are in today's field. Denney did not enter and Schnurr is playing on an all-star basketball team.

Of those playing today, Monroe leads the way, having qualified five times for the national tourney.
