With Blowback, Adrian 'Tricky" Thawes attempts to prove there's at least one more rap-rock album that's worth a listen. Hearing Tricky out is a fairly easy choice, as his resume includes expert blends on Massive Attack's landmark Blue Lines (1992) and his own masterpiece, 1995's Maxlnquaye. He's also a sharp-minded Englishman, never to be lumped in with the likes of Fred Durst, Kid Rock or Shifty Shellshock.

Blowback which features less paranoia and more gloss than a typical Tricky effort often is suggestive of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, circa 1990. This makes sense, as Anthony Keidis, Flea and John Frusciante make cameo appearances. Flea and Frusciante do their best work on 1 Da Woman, a remake of the theme to television's Wonder Woman plus some nice-guy rhymes from Tricky. As usual, Tricky spreads around the vocal assignments. Alanis Morissette actually sounds soulful on Excess, and a ragga shouter known as Hawkman puts an atmospheric spin on Nirvana's Something in the Way.

While Blowback's accessible veneer may raise suspicions among longtime listeners, it's a decent Introduction for Tricky newcomers. OZOMATLI "Embrace tiie Cliaos." Interscope Records. Ozomatli's tunes used to be the paradigm of multicultural musical fusions, joyous and irreverent reflections of the schizophrenic Los 1 Angeles that gave birth to the band. But styles are neatly separated in Ozomatli's long-awaited second CD, most of which is divided into tracks that fall clearly into either hip-hop or Latin territory.

And even though Ozomatli is closely associated with the Latin world, it is the hip-hop material that most revolutionary major-label debut albums. The heavy, gothic feel permeating the collection smacks of a horror movie, but it's not just shock value: Tech N9ne's lyrics are among the most engaging in the business. Since Sonny Rollins posed in a ten-gallon hat 40 years ago and loped through I'm an Old Cowhand, rarely has a jazzman seemed more at ease with evocations of cowboy balladry than Bruce Barth, who rolls er, writes his own. The title of this release indicates its rootedness in Barth's Western childhood and his subsequent establishment as an adult musician in New York City. The pianist-bandleader neatly divides the program among septet, quintet and trio arrangements to further showcase his prowess. Barth's meaty yet nuanced approach to the piano is furthered by his writing for horns, as in the lovely two-clarinet showcase for Steve Wilson and Adam Kolker in Sundown Time (one of four "Western" numbers on the disc). Other front-line players putting across several of Barth's fetching concepts are saxophonist Sam Newsome and trumpeter Terell Stafford.

A keyboard style as spirited and adventurous as Barth's is poised to present new aspects of a couple of Thelonious Monk tunes, Ask Me Now and Let's Call This. And Barth's flowering rapport with bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Al Foster gets further display with the standards My Shining Hour and I'm Old-Fashioned. Only $20.00 steals the show. MC Kanetic Source does a fine job of replacing Chali 2na, the band's original rapper, and guest appearances by members of De La Soul and the Black Eyed Peas add verve to overwhelmingly funky jams such as 1234 and Vocal Artillery. The latter's ominous piano line and massive beat are particularly effective. Most of the Latin stuff sounds pretty unconvincing. The solid musicianship is there, as well as the clever unification of samba and salsa, cumbia and ranchera.

But Ozo's stabs at traditional Cuban son (Timido) and Fabulosos Cadillacs-style rock en espanol (Suenos En Realidad) fail to capture the soulfulness of the sources of inspiration. "I am a guerrilla fighter," the group sings gleefully on the infectious Soy Guerrillero. Ozomatli might be a superb party band, but at this point in the game it is not exactly revolutionary.
