LOUISVILLE, KY. WEDNESDAY MORNING, AUGUST 24. 1955. SECTION 1 THE COURIER- JOURNAL. Portland Librarian for 36 Years Dies Miss Woodson First To Retire Under Rule Miss Elizabeth Scott Woodson, former librarian at the Portland Branch Library for 36 years, died at 6 a.m.

yesterday at St. Joseph Infirmary. She had been ill more than two years. Miss Woodson, 75, a librarian in the Louisville Free Public Library system for 39 years before she retired in 1952, lived at 1479 S. Fourth.

From 1913 to 1915 Miss Woodwas assistant librarian at Highland Branch Library. After a year as assistant at Portland she was made head librarian. The first person to retire under provisions of a mandatoryretirement plan for public-library employees here, Miss Woodson disliked the regulation. Calls Cost to Pride High "The cost to pride is high," she said on occasion of her retirement. this hurts to know that you have to step down." She commented that she knew "every book in the Portland Library." (Miss Woodson's assistant at Portland, Miss Jeannie Read Sampson, 66, died unexpectedly Sunday.

She and Miss Woodson had worked together for 34 years. Miss Sampson, who lived at 3333 Bank, attended to her duties at the library until the day before her death. She was buried yesterday.) Miss Woodson was a pioneer in library, service that is accepted today but was "beyond the call of duty" 35 years ago. She kept in close touch with the schools, visited them and gave talks on the services at the library. She spoke before ParentTeacher Associations and reminded the parents of the shelf of books on child training.

Gave Parties for Children She gave parties at the library for the children in the area and storytelling was a part of the entertainment. She would go to girl-scout day camps and tell stories. In 1929 Miss Woodson coached the of Portland Elementary School in a play called "The Joneses at The Library." It was such a success it was repeated at the district meeting. One of Miss Woodson's extracurricular activities was maintaining elaborate flower beds on the lawn at the Portland library. Active In Civic Project She was active in civic projects.

During World War I she made talks and sold bonds. She was a former vice president of the Kentucky Library, Association and a charter member of the Saturday Afternoon Club, a literary society, Miss Woodson was the author of several newspaper and magazine articles on library work. She was born in Woodsonville, Hart County, community named in honor of her family. She was a graduate of the old Louisville Girls High School and attended the now defunct Semple Collegiate School. She was a member of Fourth Avenue Presbyterian Church.

yesterday when his speeding automobile struck a tree on Kenwood Drive near Third Street. The victim, Marvin Trenton Roe, out the Navy less than two weeks, died at 1 a.m. in General Hospital of internal injuries. A passenger, Lawrence E. Haney, 26, of 4649 Avenue, is in good condition in the hospital with a head injury.

Was Driving 70 Mph Police said Roe, driving at approximately 70 miles an hour, apparently lost control of his sped across a yard, sideswiped a parked car, and smashed into the tree. Haney is the uncle of 16-yearold Mary Ellen Haney, 4009 Churchman, who was to have married Roe Friday. Roe had spent the evening at her home after they had taken blood tests earlier in the day in anticipation of their marriage. Roe, of 582 Tallulah, was on his way home from Miss Haney's when the accident happened. He was discharged from Navy August 12 after four years' service.

Marie Reiling Hillenmeyer, a native of Louisville, died of a heart attack Monday night at her home in Lexington. She was the mother of Herbert F. Hillenmeyer, 4029 Leland Road, department manager for the Peaslee-Gaulbert Corporation. Mrs. Hillenmeyer moved to Lexington about 1915 she married Walter W.

Hillenmeyer. He was a partner in the Hillenmeyer Nurseries at Lexington until his death 20 years ago. Mrs. Hillenmeyer is also survived other sons, Walter W. Hillenmeyer, and Donald J.

Hillenmeyer, both of Lexington. Another son, Henry, was killed in the Korean War. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Milward's Funeral Home in Lexington with burial in Calvary Cemetery there. DR.

R. V. FRENCH Dr. Richard V. French, 91, a retired physician, died at 6:30 a.m.

yesterday in Kentucky Baptist Hospital. Dr. French, of 330 E. St. Catherine, retired 25 years ago.

He practiced for a while in Arkansas and Louisville before locating at Normandy, Ky. He was a graduate of the old Hospital of Medicine, a forerunner of the University of Louisville Medical School, in 1905. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Loulie French; a daughter, Mrs. W.

G. Stiglitz; three sons, Richard D. French, Durango, Raymond H. Boss, and Fred C. Boss; a sister, Mrs.

Ida Rickman, East St. Louis; a half brother, Ewell Huey; eight grandchildren, and a greatgrandchild. The body is at the residence. MRS. NORA A.

MARTIN Mrs. Nora Agnes Martin, 80, native of Ireland, died at 7:30 a.m. yesterday at her home, 3175 S. Third. She was an active member of Holy Name Church.

Survivors are a son, John J. Martin; three daughters, Mrs. Catherine Mattingly, Mrs. Mary Willett, and Mrs. Agnes Lambrecht, the last-named of St.

Paul, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday at Blanford-Ratterman Funeral Home, 2815 S. Fourth, and at. 9 a.m.

at Holy Name Church. Burial will be in St. Louis Cemetery. CHARLES G. REEHL Charles G.

Reehl, 79, a former night watchman, died at 2 a.m. yesterday at a nursing home here. He lived on Senn Lane near Shively, Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Regina Ladenburger Reehl; a daughter, Mrs. George J.

Dempster; four sons, John Charles Richard and Lawrence J. Reehl; two sisters, Mrs. Kate Elsler and Mrs. Elizabeth Green; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m.

Groves, North Augusta, S. and Army Lt. Anthony H. Woodson, San Francisco. She also is survived by two nieces, Mrs.

P. Poag, Rock Hill, S. James, Mrs. Joseph Haidacher, Washingotn. The funeral will be at 2 p.m.
