TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER Out of 11, 2001 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR work WWW.INDYSTAR.COM and then sideswiped by a METRO SOUTH EDITION bathtub She bought the car about three years ago. "It's in good condition. It's still in good shape. I try to take care of it." Hutcherson Just got the car back from the repair shop. "The insurance man is going to look at it this week.

I guess it will be back in the shop soon." She describes what happened. "I saw the tub coming down the road," she recounts about the incident at 4:50 p.m. a week ago, on Sept. 4. "I could not get out of the way without driving into the grass or down into the ditch." "I saw the lady in front of me swerve and thought, What is she I swerved a little bit, but it was coming right at me." Hutcherson said of the fiberglass bathtub.

"She dodged it, but I couldn't dodge it." The bathtub, sliding down the road, smacked into her driver's side door and scratched up the door behind that. The bathtub had dislodged from the back of a truck. Hutcherson saw the truck in her rearvlew mirror. One bathtub remained in the truck. She found a driveway and turned around.

She met with the driver of the truck, and then the police showed up. Information was exchanged. The tub was located and reloaded. Hutcherson went on her way. Police This is a true story.

Rita Hutcherson lives a normal life in Shelbyville. When KCL Corp. discontinued a line three months ago, she was out of work. She's been collecting unemployment, hoping soon to be working again. Nothing unbelievable there.

She grew up in Whiteland, but has lived in Shelby County about 20 years. So far, so good. Then, a week ago, she was driving east on Ind. 44. It's a road she takes often and knows well.

She had picked up her boyfriend from work and was heading home. She had crossed under 1-65, and FASHION, MINUS 1 ,11 mm l-i'vTt tj Sen Dl tlj- lMttUKa w- i 1 1 MZooo nothing out of the ordinary loomed ahead, as far as she knew. She hadn't quite gotten to the Shelby County line. A few miles down the road, it happened. "1 was going home, and a bathtub came out, down the middle of the road, and sideswiped my car," 140 YEARS si cigarettes from inside the house.

She went inside and called police. When officers arrived, shots were fired. Hallgarth and members of her family ducked for cover inside the house. No one was seriously injured in the shootout. The two suspects eluded police at that point, but brothers Daniel and Matthew Schoonover later were captured.

They are now suspects in other bank robberies. As of this week, no one has compensated the Hallgarths for their car, which was riddled with bullets during the incident. She said the group had been drinking at the apartment of the truck's driver and had decided to go out to rent movies. Another of the truck's occupants who left the scene contacted police later.

He said he would report to Greenwood Police headquarters Monday. Greenwood Police Chief Albert Hessman said that man and the truck's driver, who has been identified, had not been arrested as of late Monday afternoon. Saturday, she was pulled over by a Shelbyville police officer. She was going 6 mph over the speed limit, the officer said. She was fortunate. He gave her a warning instead of a ticket. He said It was because she didn't have any points against her.

Still, it was the third not-so-good thing to happen to Hutcherson and her car in less than a month. "Now, I have just not gone out in that car unless I absolutely have to," she said.
