AMTRAK Continued from I'ugc 1 Amtrak attributes some of the increase on rising fuel prices, said Jack Plunk, principal planner at the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission. "The ridership always goes up when fuel prices go up," he said. The Increase in ridership is important for Anniston because it can bring people to the city to use the service, said Toby Bennington, Anniston city planner and a member of the Southern High-Speed Rail Commission. "It's always good to see a continued increase in usage of Amtrak because it has an impact system-wide over time," he said.

"You have that other mode of transportation here that you can offer a viable, less-costly mode of transportation for traveling a great distance." Before Saturday, Colton had taken Sweetie only to Oxford's Fourth of July pet show. His great-aunt lives in Heflin and told Colton about the pet parade. He felt he had a shot at winning the "Most Unique Pet" title.

Colton's grandmother, Debora Kelley, agreed, while noting that there was more to the decision than competition. "We thought it'd be fun," Kelley said as they approached the county courthouse. Judges in green-sequined bowler hats looked over each pet as they filed through a small gate into a courtyard. Participants lined the edges of the courtyard as Mayor Anna Berry took the micro phone to address the crowd. It's a toss-up between the chickens and the lizard, James said in a hushed voice as Mayor Berry wrapped up.

He was glad he brought his toad, Jeremy, to the parade as well. The half-ounce amphibian is a shoo-in for the Smallest Pet award, he whispered as the judges took the microphone. "The first prize is for most unique," said Margaret Hatley, volunteer judge. After a brief pause, she said: "I'd like to recognize James and John Perry for their chickens." James and his younger brother who lets James keep the egg incubator in his playroom wheeled the chicken-bearing cart to pick up their prize bag and pose for one more picture. "I couldn't believe I didn't get 'Most Colton said as other awards were handed out.

Two small dogs split the "Smallest Pet" award, much to James's consternation. Volunteer judge Leigh Caputo explained the decision-making process' after the other awards were doled out. Lizards are fairly common pets, Caputo said. Chickens, as she and Hatley viewed it, are not usually pets. "I don't know, I liked the chickens," Caputo said.

"We were just dead set on the chickens." The seemingly subjective judgment didn't satisfy the lizard's young owner, who continued to jokingly lament his loss as he and his grandmother retraced the parade route back to their car. "It's OK," Kelley told her grandson. "We had a good time." Star staff reporter Jason Bacaj: 256 (Joan), all of Spring Garden and several nieces and nephews.
