( 14 B OAKLAND TRIBUNE, FRIDAY, MARCH 2, 193 UNION FURNITURE COMPANY IN SHOPPING CENTER i n hoi NEW FURNITURE STORE OPENS FIRM LATELY MODERNIZED Abrahamson Building Was! Project of Downtown Own- erg' Drive to Dress Up I Modernization of the Abrahamson Building, at the southeast corner of Thirteenth and Washington Streets, within the past year, constituted one of the outstanding achievements In the program of the Downtown Property Owners' Association, it was disclosed today. The original problem facing the association was one of transforming hitherto apparently !'old-time" structure into one which would rank with the finest of mercantile houses in the United States. That problem was met by ripping out the front of the building, the eornices, the ornaments, which had made it one of the buildings of which Oakland was proud in the Spanish-American War days. TILING FRONT ' In the place of these features the architects and builders of the association provided for beautiful American encaustic tiling, for a front spacing. This tiling is green in color with a remarkable buff trim.. Thus the structure occupied by the Union Furniture Company is one made lovely because of the enterprise of -far-seeing individuals. - CO-OPERATED IN WORK Owners of the building are Jules and Hugo Abrahamson, who have co-operated with the modernization committee of the Downtown Property Owners' Association. J. H. King supervised the transformation of the building, and E. T. Poulkes was architect for the struc ture. The association committee Is composed of Norman Ogilvle, chairman Martin Marks, Irving Jonas an? King. : Completion of work on the Abrahamson Building marks but a ftep which the association Intends to. take in their wide-spread modernization program, according to Harold D. Weber, secretary-manager of the organization. Fabrics that set a new high standard of beauty are featured at the union Furniture Company.. Some art old friends of many" years' popularity appearing on colorful new modes; others In smart rough weaves, are innovations particularly suited to sunny Califprnla, where Spanish and Normandy type architecture abounds.
