The winner was timed in 1:42. Sir Tribal, winner of the 1957 Southland, finished third. SUNSHINE Tony DeSpirito celebrated his homecoming day at Sunshine Park by riding Indian Maid to victory in the first running of the Florida Breeders Futurity.

The race for two-year-olds has a gross value of $6,145, making it the richest race in the track's history. DeSpirito sent Indian Maid between horses at the top of the stretch and won going away in record time of :57 1, 5 for the 4V2 furlongs, knocking 25 of a second off the track record set a week ago by, Mr. Noble. Miller's Better Bee scored a head victory in the $16,375 Appleton Handicap at Gulfstream Park yesterday, but had to share the spotlisht with apprentice jockey John Ruane, who rode four winners in a row. Ruane finished fifth in the Appleton aboard Grcentree Stable's Pop Corn after winning the second, third, fourth and fifth -races on the program. He thus became the first rider to win four in a single afternoon luring the current Gulfstream meeting.

Better Bee, with Sammy Boulmetis up, ran the mile and one-eighth in 1:47 45, only a second slower than the record set by Calumet Farm's Gen. Duke last March. Roslyn Farm's Go Lightly, under jockey William M. Cook, was second and Mrs. Wallace Gilroy's Oh Johnny, the 4-5 favorite with the crowd of 20,644 and top-weighted at 122 pounds, was third, two and one-quarter lengths back of Go Lightly and four and one-half in front of Van Deren and Deming's Toby B.

His four winners put him one up on Barnett, who had 11 going into yesterday's program. BOWIE A $1,500 investment made by Trainer Hirseh Jacobs 15 years ago rang up $18,242 more on the cash register yesterday when Paper Tiger won the Bowie Handicap. The seven-year-old son of Stymie came with the familiar late rush of his father to whip eight other horses in the mile and three-sixteenths race. Paper Tiger finished two lengths ahead of Jack Amicl's Mr.

Turf, although he was last with a half-mile to go. Wayne Kendrick's King Challa was third and Jan Burke's Field of Honor fourth in the field going after total prize money of $28,450, Paper Tiger, favorite of the 18,270 fans, returned $4.20, $3.20 and $2.40. Taking his usual sweet time early in the race, Paper Tiger finished the distance in 1:48 despite footing on the soft side. Paper Tiger is the second son of Stymie to grace the winner's circle of the Bowie Handicap. Joe Jones made it twice in a row, in 1955 and 1956.

Jacobs claimed Stymie for OAKLAWN 1 Fat Jack, $9.40, 4.60, 3.60; Martial, 4.10, Told You So, 4.40. Fiv. Carat, $61.60, 18.60, 1.80; R.d 1.40, 2.80; Littl. Taken, $.80. DAILY DOL'BLF, $.171.20 1-Sunny Lil, $7, 4.40, 1.40; Ellwood, J.60, Steel Pick, 8.10.

The horse went on to win $918,485, the first in history to exceed S900.000, by the time he retired in 1949. Paper Tiger's victory assured Jacobs of a powerful entry in the $100,000 Campbell Memorial Handicap to run at Bowie on March 29. The other is Promised Land, winner last Tuesday of the San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita. Jockey Howard Grant reported after dismounting from Paper Tiger that he had only to shake his whip at the horse to get him moving to victory. Paper Tiger had the heaviest load of the field, 115 pounds.

Mr. Turf, the early leader, had a substitute jockey in Joe Cul-mone. The stewards announced during the program that they were suspending jockey Dave Gorman until after March 29 because he showed up "in an unfit condition to fulfill his riding engagements." GOLDEN' GATE Vino Supremo, who loves a muddy track, won the $20,000 Albany Handicap at Golden Gate Fields yesterday and set a track record of 1:04 for 5'2 furlongs. The six-year-old gelding, ridden by Alex Maese, defeated Poop-Deck by nearly a length. Princes Street was third in a photo finish with Swirling Abbey.

Rain and the sloppy track made no difference to the winner, who broke through the pack of eight horses in the stretch to collect the $10,850 first money. Vino Supremo rewarded his backers with $10.10, $6.30 and $4.70 payoff. Poop-Deck, with Bud Giacomelli up, returned $12.60 and $7.80, Princes Street $9.50.
