THE COURIER JOURNAL, FRIDAY, JAN. 7, 1972 Lyons keys upset A 11 1:1 ilk Hv Bafflin' Bellarmine loses 77-76 mystery to Houston Baptist Morehead sophs shock Marshall placed by Bubba Abell, Lowell Ashby and Ike Unseld. Harrell's decision to start the 6-2 Noll at forward in place of injured Ron Nicholson, moving Coulter into the pivot, gave Morehead an all-sophomore lineup. Coulter scored 26 points, Bill Dotson 20 and Howard Wallen 10. Amazingly enough, 25 of Lyons' 27 points came in the first half.

Morehead's next outing comes against Illinois State at home Monday night. Last night's game was the Eagles' fourth straight on the road. first time in the game 76-74 on a short jump shot with 1:03 left. Worsham, a reserve who scored 17 points overall, made the deciding point on a free throw with 15 seconds to go after Bellar-mine's Bobby Todd had tied the score 76-76 on a long jumper. Duncan had a chance to perhaps salvage the win for Bellarmine when he was fouled by Eddie Brown with seven seconds showing on the clock, but he missed the first free throw in a one-and-one situation.

"Bellarmine seemed to lose most of its offense when it decided to hold the ball," said Houston Baptist coach Lonnie Richards, whose team improved its record to 6-5. "But it's easy to say that now. I'm not knocking coach Reibcl. "Bellarmine was great that first half. I'm not sure what happened to them after that, but I do know my players never gave up." On that point, even Agatha Christie would agree.

By HERB WHITNEY Courier-Journal Tlmat Staff Writer Agatha Christie would have loved it. But it's doubtful that even the world's master mystery writer could have unraveled the strange goings-on in the second half if she had been at Knights Hall last night for the Bellarmine-Hous-ton Baptist basketball game. Here are the essential facts. Bellarmine, playing its best basketball of the season in the first half, shot 53 per cent from the field and led 49-35 at intermission. Bellarmine, playing its worst basketball of the season in the second half, shot 38 per cent from the field, threw the ball away 14 times, was outrebounded 27-17 and turned what had earlier looked like a rout into a nip-and-tuck affair in the closing minutes.

Bellarmine lost 77-76. "I take full blame for what happened," said Bellarmine coach Joe Reibel, whose Knights now stand 5-3 on the season after last night's unbelievable turnabout. "We tried to force them out of their zone defense in the second half by holding the ball and making them come to us, but it backfired. S.W. Va Coach Bill Harrell's baby-faced Morehead basketball team has now lost any opportunity to sneak into the Ohio Valley Conference race as a lightly-regarded "sleeper." 'But that's all right baby, that's all light. The sophomore-studded Eagles outplayed heavily-favored Marshall and scratched, out a 103-98 victory on JlarshalFs court last night. Noll ties it up trailing twice by 10 points in the first half, Morehead finally went ahead 46-45 with 4:36 left in the period on a fastbreak layup by Eugene Lyons, whose 2 points topped all scorers. Southwestern Louisiana's 15th-ranked college basketball team avenged its only loss of the season last night, turning the tables on visiting Eastern Kentucky by a score of 87-80. It was the Louisiana team's seventh straight win after dropping a 105-99 decision to Eastern at Richmond on Dec. 1 in its first game of the season. Eastern fell behind early In the first half last night and never caught up.

A six-point surge in the final minutes of the first half helped Southwestern Louisiana to a 10-point edge, 43-33, at halftime. A three-point play by guard Billy Burton pulled Eastern back to within seven at the start of the second half. Then Southwestern Louisiana turned it on full speed ahead, eventually going ahead by 18 points, 65-47, with 11:38 to play. That was Southwestern Louisiana's longest lead of the game. Eastern suffered a pair of crippling blows in the final six minutes.

With 5:36 left, guard George Bryant fouled out with 23 points. Eleven seconds later, his running mate Burton joined him on the sidelines. Still, Eastern, using a full-court press, scrapped back to within four points, 84-80, with 44 seconds left on a free throw by Wade Upchurch. Upchurch had a chance to trim another point off the host's lead, but missed his bonus free throw. Southwestern Louisiana got the rebound and stalled for 30 seconds.

With 14 seconds lelt, Steve Greene was fouled' by Bobby Newell. He hit the first to make the score 85-80, then missed the second. Eastern's Daryl Dunagan rebounded, but Eastern lost the ball out of bounds with five seconds to play. Green hit a field goal at the buzzer to account for the final margin. Dwight Lamar, who hit on 13 of 31 field goal attempts, led the winners in scoring with 34 points.

Fred Saunders added 13 and Payton Townsend 12 for Southwestern Louisiana. Bryant's 23 points were high for Eastern, now 5-3. Attendance 6,472. Associated Press Sam Simmons poured in 24 points last night to pace Bradley to a 95-79 romp past Memphis State in a Missouri Valley Conference contest at Peoria, 111. Both teams traded baskets early in the first half until Bradley exploded for a 33-15 lead with eight minutes left in the half. They led 46-31 at the intermission and were never headed. Don Holcomb, a 6-10 center, led Memphis State with 24 points and Larry Finch added 21 in the losing effort.

Bradley now is 2-1 in the conference and 7-4 overall. Memphis State is 0-1 in the MVC and 5-4 overall. Meanwhile, sophomore Bob Whitley scored four clutch baskets in the final eight minutes to lift Drake to a 61-58 victory over visiting Wichita in the MVC opener for both teams. Whitley's basket with 2:58 to play pushed Drake into a 58-57 lead. Cleo Kilgore's rebound shot 42 seconds later stretched the margin to three and Wichita never got closer than two points.

Sophomore Larry Seger had 16 points to pass Drake, now 4 5. Wichita is 6-2. West Texas tripped North State 79-69 in another MVC clash at Amarillo. Bouncing back from a six-game losing skid, Louisiana State whipped Georgetown (D.C.) 90-71 at Baton Rouge, La. Bill Newton tossed in 37 points for the winners.

Southern Illinois outran the University of San Diego 95-74 at Carbondale, 111, as Greg Starrick, the transfer from UK, had 18 points, including four straight free throws which brought his string of consecutive foul shots to 50, just 10 short of the NCAA record set in 1967 by Bob Lloyd of Rutgers. Sovietsky Sport charged Fischer with "ajiarchy" and "disrespect" because he said he would only meet Spassky in a city that offered to pay them enough.

Jhe paper's chess commentator, A. Roshal, expressed fear that Fischer's demands will force the world chess com-rniinity to raise the stakes at future international competitions. 'Other players will probably share his pojnt of view to see chess primarily as means of enrichment," Roshal wrote. He said Fischer was putting money before the game and thus "inflicts damage on th art- of chess." Halftime S.W. Louisiana 43 33.
